Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: THORPE - Sheffield
« on: Monday 11 July 11 17:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi  :)

It's hard to say if we have a connection at all.  I have some information on my GGgrandfather James Thorpe 1816 - 1820c

1851 census lived at 174 Bath Street, (Eccleshall Bierlow), Sheffield
Pen Blade Grinder

1861 census - Living at 49 Cliffe Bridge, "Hope Inn", Monk Bretton, Yorkshire
Innkeeper +
Employed Domestic servant - Margaret Townley 13yrs

1871 census - living at 1 Hermitage Street, "Queen Adelaide", Eccleshall Bierlow, Sheffield
Licensed victualler

His son James Thorpe (1849) who married Louisa Morris moved to Workington to work at the Bessamer Steel Works.  This James was disinherited by his father after getting Louisa pregnant out of wedlock.  ::)  They went on to have 11 children of which my grandfather was the youngest but they stayed in Workington for the rest of their lives.  James was injured in an accident at the steel works and badly burnt.  He died around 1905 when my grandad was 6.

If there is a connection maybe your g grandad might have some memories of something above ???

Let me know how you get on.  :)

Sorry I think my post was unclear.  I meant the surname Owens (I missed the 's' off).  She was originally married to William Ramsey Owens 1890-1917.  He was born in Ireland.

Just as a little update.  Daisy had been married before and I've now found out she was Ethel Daisy Player originally.  I think she may have lost her first husband (Owen)in WW1.

Hi Gedbarns

How interesting.  Do you have any idea whereabouts in Ireland William McGarry came from??

I'm afraid all I have is what I have already mentioned.  I have all the descendants of Elizabeth and some photos if you are interested in them.

I have William McGarry b1830 - 1899 married to Ann ??
With the following children:-

Margaret A McGarry c1861
John McGarry c1865
William McGarry 1866
Charles McGarry c1869
Elizabeth McGarry c1871

regards, Anne-Marie

I actually met William and Daisy when I was a child and they had a son Patrick and I have found him on the FreeBMD thanks to your help.

This site is amazing.  When I ask a question there is ALWAYS someone who helps and gives me a lead.

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble.  Really appreciate it.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Topping marriage 1919 - Workington?

Can anyone help with this one.  I have received an email from a relative saying they have found a
marriage record for William Newall Topping and Ethel D Owens in Jul-Sep 1919 6d 1426??

My Toppings are originally from Workington.  William Newall Topping lived in Leeds in the 1960's.  He was married to Daisy and I am wondering if that is what the D in Ethel D Owens stands for.

Anyway if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

Anne-Marie

Well I think I've traced Muriel Shaw's parents to George Henry Shaw married to Ada Elizbeth ???:-\

And remarkable my hubbies memory has started to kick in 'cos the name Shaw 'rings a bell' and once I mentione Hulme, Manchester that too rang another bell.  ::)  If I find anything else out he won't be able to sleep tonight for bells ringing  ;D
