Armagh / Re: Annaclare, House
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather was once a resident of Annaclare when his father, the widower, Henry Scott, married the widow of John Scott, Elizabeth Newton Scott in 1888. John and Henry were distant cousins. They both had children to raise and was left to manage Annaclare.

Up until the sale of Annaclare in 2010, the Johnston family resided there. A letter I received from Mrs Johnston stated she and her late husband had lived there since 1956.

Thomas Scott's death in 1955 would have marked the last Scott at Annaclare. He was the youngest sibling of John Scott and Elizabeth Newton Scott.

In the early 1800's George Scott Esq. is listed at Annaclare. He seems to have held high status in the Armagh community and church. He had no children and when he died in 1857 passed Annaclare to his nephew and namesake, George Scott. When he died intestate in 1864 it went to his father Thomas of Salter's Grange (brother of George Esq.) On his death in 1865 he bequeathed it to his eldest daughter, Mary Ann, but with his son, John Scott, as sole executor. John seems to have been in possession around the time of his marriage to Eliza Newton about 1872. They had five children, that I can account for, when he died. She married Henry blending his three or four children with hers.

Also to add that the daughter of John and Elizabeth Scott, Elizabeth Adelaide Scott did marry Herbert Couser.

I hope this helps. I'd love to know more myself. I'm too far away to make local inquiries

Hello! I am a little unsure I am understanding how this all works, but I will try again.
My grandfather, Andrew Scott b.1869 is the sibling to your great-grandmother, Martha Louisa Scott. I have seen the 1911 census but wasn't absolutely sure of the connection. I would love to know more about your side of the family. There seems to have been other siblings, but not sure of names etc. I have communicated with the woman who lives at Annaclare, she was not familiar with the Scotts, not being from Armagh. I do have some photos of the house sent to me by a cousin and a gentleman who spent several years there as a child during the air raids in London. His grandmother was Elizabeth Adelaide Scott/Couser.
I hope this is of interest to you, and if more info needed we can elaborate with a PM.     Madie

My cousin has recently confirmed the connection with my grandfather, Andrew Scott (b.1869), as the son of Henry Scott through a will which listed the same address where my Andrew was living in Dublin at the time (1899) It seems his mother was Anne Eliza Croft. My cousin also found a marriage cert. dated Jun 17, 1867, city of Armagh. Father's name; William, both listed as farmers. Anne's father was William Croft, also farmer. Here is where it gets foggy. We heard that our great grandfather, Henry, married a widow, with the same last name of Scott. So would that be Anne Eliza, or was it the widow of John Scott of Annaclare, who would be Elizabeth Scott? So perhaps there was a "blended family" of children. I wonder if John Scott and Henry Scott were related, and how. Brothers, cousins?

Thank you creaney,
this is good information. I heard Andrew's father was a farmer in Armagh so this would seem the right direction. At some point I will come to Ireland if I can't get my search figured out through the LDS, the internet, and nice people like yourself.
Madie

I can’t add a lot but can tell you that Annaclare is the right place for Scotts & they were farmers. They were known to my family up to the 1940s, maybe later & in my research in the locality I have come across the name a lot.

For research in that area the most likely church for baptism records would be Kildarton but unfortunately to the best of my knowledge they are not transcribed anywhere & are not filmed by the LDS or in PRONI so the only way to see them is to visit the church. Salters Grange is another possibility as is Loughgall with a small likelihood of Kilmore, all of these are available through the LDS family history centres.

Good luck.

Thank you Mary, I also found this info, its funny how the names seem right, but I believe John died when my grandfather was about 13, and apparently was still in Ireland in 1882. I appreciate the help.

RE: ANNACLARE SCOTTS; A COUSIN VISITED IRELAND IN 1999 AND FROM THE FAMILY'S DESCRIPTION OF THE HOME'S LOCATION "NEAR THE ROAD TO PORTADOWN IN ANNACLARE" SAW A HOME, AND SPOKE TO CURRENT OWNER WHO CONFIRMED IT WAS PREVIOUSLY OWNED BY THE SCOTT FAMILY. THE CURRENT HOME WAS BUILT IN 1830. ANDREW SCOTT'S DEATH CERT AND IMMIGRATION INFO ONLY REFERRED TO BEING FROM ARMAGH. I UNDERSTOOD HIS FATHER DIED WHEN HE WAS 13, AND MOTHER REMARRIED TWICE AFTER THAT, SO I THINK WITH LITTLE REAL INFORMATION TO GO ON I AM JUST TRYING ANYTHING. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

My grandfather Andrew Scott b.Oct 12 1869 might have been from Annaclare, with parents of either John Scott and Anna Carroll, or father Henry Scott & mother?. Not wanting to send for birth cert. until I am sure of parents. Any help would be appreciated
