Australia / Re: William MADDOX b. 1873 emigrated about 1910

William Maddox was a Superintendant of Insurance Agents by 1908, and was also a Methodist lay preacher.  Thanks for looking and your input.

I'm aware of the William Maddox going to USA in 1910, but he isn't the one!   Thanks anyway.

It's possible William may have used a variant surname: MADDOCKS, MADOCS, or MADDOC.  Is there any chance that an Australian burial record could be found which would link to his age / date of birth?

William had no middle name.  His parents were Thomas Maddox and Emma (nee Phillips), and both were born in Gloucestershire.   I've traced the rest of his family in the UK, but he (William) is the elusive one.

Australia / William MADDOX b. 1873 emigrated about 1910

I'm searching for William MADDOX, b.15 Feb 1873 in Drybrook, Gloucestershire who was believed to have emigrated, without his family, to Australia about 1910.  I have no idea of where he may have entered Australia.  He was last recorded on the electoral register at Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1910, and has since disappeared from UK records.

I have searched what passenger lists are online and had absolutely no success  :( - but I'm open to any help or assistance that you kind RootsChatters in Australia  ;) with access to local resources may have to offer.

United States of America / Re: William MADDOX emigrated on ORDUNA, 10 Feb 1915

Thanks for that information, shellyesq.  I think I can now knock this particular strand of research on the head, as my William was married to an Eliza and had nothing to do with the Admiralty.

Thanks also for looking at the 1920 census.

(However, if anyone has an interest in my William I would be interested to hear from you)

I'm looking for a William MADDOX b. 15 Feb 1873 in Drybrook, Gloucestershire, England. He left his family, and it is reputed that he emigrated probably after 1910.  I've found an Ellis Island record for a William Maddox who emigrated to USA from Liverpool on-board the ORDUNA that arrived on 10 Feb 1915 that may "fit the bill".   This William travelled without any family.

Can anyone provide any further leads (US citizenship applications, electoral records, 1920 census?) that could help me confirm this is "my" William Maddox please?

Gloucestershire / Re: Gloucestershire Baptism abt 1864

FreeBMD has a marriage record for Apr-Jun 1863 (Cheltenham 6a 681) for a   William Henry WIGLEY who (potentially) married a Sarah PEAT.

If this is correct, then Henry Frederick Arthur Wigley may have been born in Cheltenham rather than in the Forest of Dean with his siblings.   Hope this helps   :-\

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Birth/Baptism - Bristol - Henry Swaffield
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 14:50 BST (UK)  »
It's not unusual to be baptised years after birth and in a different area.

The 1841 Census for Axminster Devon (Ref HO/107/200/8) has a Henry aged 10 months with parents Isaac (age 30 - Tailor - not born in Devon) and Mary, age 30.  Could this be the family - it's not too far from Bristol?   ???

If it is a possibility then FreeBMD lists a birth entry for Henry John Swaffield in 1840 Q2 Axminster Vol 10 Page 3 that will enable you to obtain a birth certificate.

Herefordshire / Re: John MADDOX born Bredwardine 1769
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 19:23 BST (UK)  »
The Hugh Wallis site was quite interesting and provided numerous Maddox's in and around Herefordshire.

I've trawled the IGI site of Maddox's and now have a comprehensive family tree of the majority of Maddox's in Herefordshire in that time frame - but I've still not been able to find the elusive JOHN MADDOX (reportedly born in Bredwardine in 1769).  None of the families seem to have a 'space' in the right place!

One day perhaps someone may find him before I do.
Any leads would be appreciated.
