Sussex / WHEELER family of Winchelsea, Sussex
« on: Friday 16 October 09 11:25 BST (UK)  »
I found Wheeler family group living at Five Houses Winchelsea and North Street in later Census records.
I believe John Alfred Wheeler married Laura Emily Eldridge (widow) in 1875
Their children were named:
Thomas
Frederick
Nelson
Daisy
Lottie
Rose
My ancestor was Laura's daughter Annie Laurie Eldridge b.1872
I hope to learn of the whereabouts of Wheeler descendants.

Yes, there are Verrall families in Lewes area.
I found one in Piddinghoe / Swanborough villages, indexed as VIRRALL
but same family later assuming the regular spelling.
I'll look up the reference and given names of the couple and children:

Thanks, Chris in 1066Land!
I am an interested descendant of the couple:
Henry Lavender and Elizabeth Tolhurst
Married 1819 at Guestling
I believe their son James Lavender married Jane Weller
I came upon this archived post while searching on the term Winchelsea
I would like a swift way of checking on Surnames and local Placenames in Sussex...

Sussex / Re: Almond Family of Rye..

Hi Frek and Ricky
The Amon family you list for 1871 totally dumbfounded me, as a possible surname alternative to Almond.  My ancestor was born in 1849 to Caroline Almond, who married that same year; William Eldridge, and was listed as his son; Jonathan Eldridge, (age: 1) in the 1851 Census.  There were older siblings - so there may have been a previous marriage which I hope to find.
Another occurence of the name, spelled "Amon" refers to the wife of another ancestor, so I shall consider both spellings in future.

Hi Vee,
I would like to find Mary Johnson's siblings, perhaps also born in Denton parish, Newhaven.
Which of John and Mary Balcombe's grandchildren are you researching?  John died in 1847, and the family was split up in 1853.  Mary took on the children until her demise in 1864.

As yet, there has been no trace of Charity's children who survived her.  There were a number of baptisms in Arlington parish, before they came to Newhaven.  Their two young sons; William and Henry, were sadly drowned while out on a boat trip in 1805.  The death of Charity in 1808 meant that the family broke up thereafter.

My second cousins & I are looking into John Balcomb(e) at present.  I believe that he was born in 1867.  Another of the same name was born in 1869 - and that is where the confusion arises!  It would be good to know whether John was a Bach. or a Widr. in 1809 and to find the bond for Phoebe Geering's bb child.
