Northumberland / Re: The Kennedys of Northumberland
« on: Monday 23 January 12 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
I'm descended from a John Kennedy in Newcastle. He's nothing to do with your Kennedys as far as I know though. Mine was born in Stirling and was in the army for 25 years. He transferred whilst in India from the  59th Foot to the 5th Foot and returned with the regiment to the barracks in newcastle about 1881. Married an Annabella Coffey in 1884 and when he left the army he opened a Fried Fish shop in Walker.
I have a Kennedy mystery though and would appreciate any info you come across that might solve it.
My John Kennedy appears to have a sister, Elizabeth Theresa Kennedy b 25/10/1861, who I know nothing of until she appears in Newcastle, getting baptised at St Mary's Cathedral  in 1887 at the age of 25? She's definitely the sister of my John (same parents on the register). My John's mother, a Margaret O'Neil, remarried in 1867 in Glasgow to a John Appleford from the 59th Foot Reg. At the  1871
Census Margaret is in Dublin but no details found re Elizabeth yet. 1881 Census has Margaret living in Woolwich and my GG Gfather John staying the night (on his way back from India I think), but no mention of an Elizabeth Kennedy. I can't find Elizabeth on the 1891 census and can't find any marriage around her baptism (in case she was getting baptised so she could marry a catholic)

Northumberland / Re: St Andrews cemetary Newcastle/Jesmond

John,

For a possible next time, bear in mind that the Newcastle Bereavement Services are very helpful with siting of graves, even if no headstones. Their plans indicate how many plots between certain known points. In fact they sometimes offer folk an on-site appointment to exactly pinpoint plot etc.

Michael

That's handy to know. I know which cemetarys (cemetaries? sp? I should be ashamed of myself for not knowing for certain), several of my ancestors are buried in but doubt any of them have stones. Wee task for the new year :-)

It's a lovely cemetary. George Orwell's wife is buried there. Unfortunatetly the council in their wisdom have vandalised the whole place by knocking over hundreds of Grave stones that they deemed a threat to health and safety. Well worth a visit if you like that sort of thing.
Re your stone, unless they thought it a danger it should still be standing. Even if it's not , it will be lying on the grave face up.

Northumberland / Re: St Andrews Baptismal Records from 1841 on

I was looking at that very same Microfilm yesterday in the Archives ;D

I've been told by a couple of people that the Catholic records have been transcribed in the past , but nobody seems to know what happened to them.

There's a typed index for St Andrews in the archive but it only goes up to 1840 :(

Hi Buzz. I've been researching my ancestor, John Kennedy, who joined the 59th Foot in 1865 at the age of 15 and was transferred to the Nothumberland Fusiliers in 1877 whilst in India. I found his military records on Ancestry.co.uk and they give quite a lot of information. Have you tried his name on the Ancestry search? The 5th (Northumberland Fusiliers) were in the Second Afghan War 1878 to 1880 and there's an excellent website full of details about regiments involved here

I even managed to find the names of the ships he sailed on to get there 8)

Howard, Clohesy,Colclough,Coffey,Dixon,Braham,Potts and Bowes

Just wondering if anyone on here is researching any of the above families?
I've got a fair bit on the Bowes family but am getting a bit confused as I think the parentage of some of them might be wrong (info given me by others). I've a feeling that some of the listed children are actually children of siblings.I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has any of these families in their trees. They're a mix of Gateshead, Auckland and Newcastle with most roads leading to Ireland.

thank you 8)

Durham / Re: Do you have ancesters in Gateshead Fell 1886?

Hi Lomo

Gateshead Fell was an area South of Gateshead itself.  It's all merged together now but was once a separate township.  I checked anyway though, just in case, but there were no Howards or Malleys.

 :)

thank you 8)
