Yes that might be a possible.
We were members many years ago but we let it lapse. Back then we didn't get much out of being in the group & we lived in our native Yorkshire, so Carlisle wasn't as far away. I'll try some other forums too.

Thanks,
Margaret

Hi Andrea & Michael,

Thanks for your efforts. It looks as though this will have to stay as a "pending" for a long while yet.  It's a long way from Inverness to Carlisle!  :(

Regards,
Margaret

Hi again Michael

Got your Greenhows on a very old file card but didn't have Abraham & Esther. Also knew Richard married a Mary but not that she was Jacques.

We have that their daughter Elizabeth bpt 3/7/1820 had an illegitimate son Joseph bapt 7/11/1835, Souterfell, Mungrisdale. The father was Joseph Jackson of Penrith.

Also their son John bpt 9/3/1842 at Fieldhead, we have as marrying Mary Hodgson. John was a stonemason, she a dressmaker. see below:-  :)

More interesting is that in 1861, John & Mary were living at High Folly, Thackthwaite, Watermillock with 2 children, Mary Ann age 11yrs & Abram J (sic). The "J" is Jacques! & he was bapt 29/5/1853 & Mary Ann 6/11/1849 both Watermillock.
BUT next door at Low Folly is our Joseph, a widower, with some of his children. Mary Ann (nee Taylor who I am trying to trace) was dead by this time.

On the same census is William Hodgson age 52 (a Stonemason) & his wife Ann age 44 living at Green Bank, Watermillock.....& guess what? her maiden name is Greenhow! So could William Hodgson be a brother to Mary Greenhow nee Hodgson?

Coincidence or what?! Confused....so are we.

There were other stonemason Greenhows in Watermillock too. We have not so far found a link to the other Greenhows or with your John next door to our Joseph. Surely though somewhere they all connect.

Even more.......William Hodgson & Ann had a son William Greenhow Hodgson & he died in 1922 & is buried in Watermillock. He married a Dorothy Ellen & they had a daughter Annie Alice (Wells) who died in 1969, still in Watermillock.

Hope you find the above useful & anymore info greatly appreciated especially on your Richard.

Margaret

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your prompt reply! Wow..you've got Greenhows. That's interesting about Mary Jacques. Greenhow is actually my husbands direct line.

Would be interested in your line. We have worked on the following.

Josephs father Thomas Greenhow was Bapt 25/7/1791 to Dan Greenhow & Mary Jacques. Other children were Elizabeth, John, Mary & Abraham.
Dan & Mary were married 17/1/1788 BUT Dan had been married before to Elizabeth Workman of Berrier 6/9/1768 & had one child, another Joseph bapt 29/6/1769
This Mary Jacques we believe had previously been married to an Isaac Noble 6/6/1775 Greystoke.
We don't know who Dan Greenhow's father was but a possible is Joseph Greenhow of Moor End Mungrisdale as we found a Dan bapt 25/9/1740 Moor End.

Any of the above ring any bells?

But thank you for your reply.

Hi Andrea,

Yes I agree, I think it was more exciting before computers. Having said that though, being in the Highlands, our research would have come to a standstill without it.

Thanks for help re posting, I will try that as I think I have found the person who had the fiche.

Yes have tried Scotlandspeople. Only 2 Mary Ann Taylors & not anywhere near where she was supposedly born. It is possible of course that she was from Cumbria & her family were moving around. The area where the Greenhows lived was where the Borders & Scots drove down their cattle & there were many hiring fairs etc.

I have a possible year of death....1859 Penrith district but there were 2 in that year. Her last child was born about 1857/58 & she was dead by 1861.

I shall keep trying!
Thanks,
Margaret

Hi to those who have kindly replied so far & thank you.

Re my above lookup request.
We started researching the Greenhows 30 years ago (before computers ;)) & have extensive family. Joseph Greenhow's father we know was Thomas but we have been unable to find Mary Ann Taylor's father or family. She was born in Moffat (Dumfrieshire) according to the 1851 census probably about 1818. Back then we had noted the marriage entry but cannot remember or find any written details of it.......did we just get it from the IGI? We do remember looking at bishops transcripts & registers at Carlisle, & the Mungrisdale/Greystoke registers sometimes gave a lot of info re parents etc. We still have our old notes.
We have tried Scotlandspeople etc but no matches. Visited Moffat churchyard recently but to no avail.

A father's name might just give us something more to go on.

Re the family in Watermillock in 1851. Yes these are they.

My husband & I now live in the Highlands, whilst there is an LDS church, the opening hours for research are not suitable for us to use. We have made use of their facilities in Leeds many years ago.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I'd read on this site where someone had the Mungrisdale/Greystoke registers on microfiche?

Just want the entry checking please to see if father is given &/or place they gave as living at.

Joseph's father Thomas was a Yeoman at West Ing, Mungrisdale. Joseph & Mary Ann moved to Thackthwaite, Watermillock & Thomas did eventually go live with them.

Hope that fills in a bit more. I was trying to be brief with my first posting. :)
