Armed Forces / Charles Joseph Leyland Tompkins

Hi Everyone.

I am looking for any help identifying the military uniform worn by the gentleman in this picture, he is Charles Joseph Leyland Tompkins & he was my Great Grandfather, the family were told he served in the Essex Regt and we assume that was during WW1 however we cannot find him in the 1901 census so not sure if he was serving at that time elsewhere.

I would also be interested to know your thoughts regarding what medals he is wearing & what they may be for.

We believe he was born in 1879 in Longton Stoke on Trent Staffordshire.

Thanks

Andrea.

Thank you for the quick reply, I can see now where the Prestwood road may have got its name from.Although interesting it does only give information for 1896. Do you think Wolverhampton archives would have  any records, I suppose what I am looking for is a list of names of the men that would have worked in these mines and possibly their employment records. Does this information even exist, would it have been recorded?

Hi, both my gg grandad and g grandad were miners in Wednesfield, Wolverhampton. If possible I would like to find out more about where they worked, if these collieries would have any records surviving and if so where I could access them. I am talking between 1840-1900.

Many thanks

Andrea

Hi,

Thank you both for taking the time to reply, very interesting information you have both provided.

One last question at the time he was killed he left a widow and a young child living in Gibraltar,i assume living in military quarters  aside from an army pension would the army have assisted her in any way or would she have been left to fend for herself.

Regards

Andrea.

My great uncle John Henry Choyce born 1881in Wolverhampton served with the south staffs 1st regiment, sadly losing his life in the great war October 1914. Like many others his record did not survive so I'm trying to fill in the gaps.
I know that he served in the second Boar war between 1899-1902 so I'm assuming he possibly joined 1897?
I would also like to know how long it would take him to work his way up the ranks, i have information showing he was a sergeant in 1907 and he is listed as a company sergeant major when he dies.
Many Thanks
Andrea

Hi Nicola, aka smudwhisk, can you or anybody else tell me where I can purchase a DVD from? Something I'd never thought of doing.
Maybe we need to start a campaign, get fellow root chatters to write to the bbc, they could show it instead of the football  ;)
I wonder if Diana's reading this if she would know if there are any plans to sell the series to the UK?.
Sorry if I have hijacked your thread, I hope you understand my frustration :)
Regards
Andrea
