Hello, I am Manager of the Castle House Museum in Dunoon Scotland. One of my volunteer helpers said that it was a family story that a relative was a Miss Brazil. I decided to a quick search and discovered your posting. Her ancestors were MacPhersons linked with Dunoon for a good number of years. She is anxious for more information. Can you assist?  She has agreed that I may enquire on her behalf.

Canada / Canadian Army WW2 stationed England

I am Manager of the Castle House Museum ( Registered Charity) in Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland
Recently a lady attended who was trying to trace her father who had been billeted in Coleshill Road, Teddington, Middlesex England in 1944. She has absolutely no other information on him other than a photograph.

She had been informed that his cap badge was that of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders a Scottish Regiment with close local connections to that of our Museum,  hence her enquiry.
I am not at all convinced of this as the badge  is not the correct shape. In a recent conversation with her she casually mentioned that she had heard the gentleman referred to as a "Canuck" which she thought was a Scottish term and this was reinforced in her mind due to his headgear - a Glengarry. My research has evidenced that Canadian Army personnel did wear this type of headgear. Indeed I have seen an illustration of a Canadian cap badge of the time which looks very much like the one worn.
Any help or information on how to progress this would be appreciated.

Have not had time to fully check this out but am sure the one you are talking about is what is now known as Ellis Lodge. It is small and very close to where the Catherine Mary Homes were. It might even have been connected. I have a picture of it somewhere with the name of the organisation you are talking about on it. Will post again when I am more sure.

Have just been informed that the man was referred to as a Cannuck. This was assumed to be a reference to a Scotsman!!

It is in fact a nickname for Canadians.

Looked for Canadian WW2 cap badges and there it is as I thought very similar to Argylls but with crown on top exactly as it appears. Another quick look at Canadian WW2 uniforms showed they wore Glengarrys.

With this new information are you in a position to help from your knowledge base or do you suggest that I go it alone?

There are a few sites that show this quite clearly.

Many thanks.

John 915  Thanks for your help. You sound absolutely convincing. For the life of me I cannot be convinced that it is an A & S H badge which is entirely pointed at the top. This one is certanly not. I could even convince myself that it is surmounted with a crown. I have looked at a real A & SH badge from the same angle as in the photograph and it is not at all like it. Is there any chance it is some obscure perhaps Canadian or London Scottish regiment? Is there a chance another regiment might have used same dicing?  Sorry if this seems an ungrateful response to your undoubted excellent knowledge. I am clutching at straws as it is so important to a lady who has been searching for years and who came in to see me at the Museum (Registered Charity) I work in. Many thanks alsoto others.

Thanks. You are correct about the angle. It is making things difficult. Did not see any which gave me any confidence. Kings Own Scottish Borderers is a possibility.

Have been along route before. BUT  Enhanced picture of badge shows that it definitely is not Argyll and Sutherland Highlander badge(which is too pointed) as was suggested before.

Soldier was billetted at Teddington Middx. in 1944 . sergeant with two medal ribbons.

I am acting for a lady for whom identification would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Finding all this interesting. As a very definite non expert I must bow to others.

Still think this cannot be A&SH badge as even with a replicated view using a real A&SH badge at exactly the same angle I cannot get it to assume the shape as in the photo. Are there any obscure badges that fit? The KOSB one looks the part but the dicing is definitely wrong.

Thanks for all your assistance.
