England / Re: BRITANNIA HEARD (nee HOADLEY) & Fairgrounds
« on: Monday 30 September 19 07:47 BST (UK)  »
The Britannia Hoadley who married Henry Heard was the daughter of Horace Hoadley and Amelia Turner, not the Britannia Hoadley connected to the fairground family. She was part of a large community of gypsies who settled around the docks and Plaistow area. Her father was a hawker. Britannia had three husbands, and lived her entire life in Essex, where she brought up 14 children. She died in 1972, and is fondly remembered by her grandchildren.

Many thanks. That is really helpful. After earlier replies I had an idea that it may be the 7th Hussars because of the regional connection.

Many thanks for your help. I had another look at the original photo, but the scan reproduces it very well - there isn't any more detail to be seen in the cap badge unfortunately.

The chap in the attached photo enlisted after the war I think, but cant be sure. His name was Leonard Grainger. Id be grateful if anybody could identify the regiment from the uniform and insignia, and maybe the likely date? Many thanks for looking and for all help

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism/birth lookup - Hide/Hyde
« on: Thursday 03 November 11 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks.I had seen that on the IGI. It could work, depending on how long before her baptism she was born. If her baptism was only months after her birth then she would have been on the young side when she got married. And although her ages recorded on the census returns vary, in 1851 the age suggests a birth date closer to 1790.

But a gap of a year between birth and baptism and Id feel more comfortable with that particular Jane.

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to look.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Baptism/birth lookup - Hide/Hyde

Jane Hide married John Shepherd in Rottingdean on 2 March 1813.  They moved to Somerset. Ages given for Jane in census returns vary wildly. I would think she was born between 1785 and 1795.

Id be very grateful if anybody has details of Jane's baptism date/parents from the register, or her birth from any other source if there is anybody on the board who is researching the family.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Re: 10th Hussars

Interesting to learn this about the 10th Hussars. One of my ancestors served with them from 1846 to 1870, leaving as 876 squadron quarter master sergeant. They were in the East Indies in the 1840s and 1850s until they went to the Crimea. Does anybody know where they would have been stationed in India?

many thanks

nick
