I'm not able to see any connection to my Stuarts. I don't have any William Stuart who was born 1840. So it looks like we are looking at different family trees at the moment.

Oh brilliant thanks! Great that this is still alive!!! Am still totally immersed but have had some upheavals so will gradually get back to all this fascinating input. Thanks to everyone who has taken an interest and given information. Once I unpack all the family history stuff I will be up and running again!

Hi there, this is ssiii and I've tried replying to petefeet twice. The first time I got a reply from igorstrav and the second time I got a message saying that petefeet's inbox is full. Can you help?

I think you might be right since when I think about it William's first wife Hannah died in 1817 and it's not likely that he would have married and had another son already by 1818.  I've deleted this William as I probably got it from someone else on the family tree.
thanks - you've helped to clarify for me.

Hi there,
I think we found the baptism at ERO for 3.8.1818 - I haven't tried a wild-card search yet - never quite sure how that's done!

Thank you - really useful - I can check out the names you have given me.

does anyone have any idea about the date of the photograph?

Thanks again

this is brilliant detective work - thanks so much!
It looks like Florence was Charley's niece - not daughter as on the 1901 census - so she was probably just staying with them for a while.
Which census search was Florence found on? - I did an Ancestry search for 1891 but she didn't come up.
thanks again

This one fascinates me because I think the photographers are family.
Firstly I would like to identify the person in the photo by a date. The photo measures 95mmx140mm and is on matt paper stuck on card which is 2mm thick and dark grey verging on brown in colour. The card has been cut down to the size of the photograph in order to stick in an album. The photo is sepia coloured.

The photographers are W & J Stuart at 47-49 Brompton Road.  My ancestor Samuel Robert Stuart was listed as a photographer in the 1861 census, living at Queen's Buildings just off the Brompton Road. He had an older brother William whom I know nothing about but might account for the W.  Who the J could be I have no idea.  Samuel Robert chucked in photography and became an innkeeper, which might also point to the fact that the business belonged to his brother.
This is all guesswork !!!!

would appreciate some expert opinions :-)
