The Common Room / Re: Waterlow & Sons (Printers)

Thank for that I will be contacting them.

How is it that when I googled all I got was articles on stamps & ebay to buy stamps, but nothing about Luton.

I did know that they moved from London.  I think they merged with another company at some time in the late 60's early 70's.  And I think that is around the time the name of Waterlow & Sons may have been dropped.

Hi Curley,
Would you be willing to send me a copy of the Campbell marriage cert? I would certainly like to see it.
There is a 1871 census for Henry James Canvan (28Yr / b1843 Liverpool), Mary, his wife (40Yr / b1831 Stockport), and Daughter Mary Ann (12Yr / b1859 Liverpool) and Margaret A. Reilly, Step-Daughter (15Yr / b 1856 Liverpool). I have dismissed this as being a totally separate family, although there are similaraties.
Mary Ann's birth cert: Born in Barter St., St. Thomas, Liverpool. Fa=Henry Canvan a Labourer, he signed his name & address (no other info) Ma=Mary Canvan nee Cook(e) (no other info.) Residence is Pownall St.
I only know about Ma=Mary Cook/Canvan as Irish from census info. Since I cant find Pa=Henry Canvan on any census, I dont know where he was born.
Cheers, Digger

Hello Curley, (& CaroleW),
Thanks for your input. Yes, this has been a far from simple matter. I can confirm that I am happy that I have the right birth cert. for Mary Ann Canvan; but it is strange that they all seem to vanish after that birth, in 1839, until the 1861 census. But its only James and Mary Ann (no sign of Mary's parents or her 1st child Sarah Ann. There would appear to be Canavans and Cannavans as variations, that might fit.
Agreed the Campbell marriage has to be a red herring. A possibility is that with Mary Ann's mother being Irish that Mary (Cook(e) and Henry Canvan) went there and Mary Ann and James H. went there to get married. Or just did not bother, which seems rather odd.
Regards, Digger

Carole, Many thanks for your replys, could you please explain what the 'beta site' is and how it works.  I did find this Campbell marriage, and questioned it - the reply I got was that there is no marriage for a Mary Canvan. Her 'husband' James Hickson was a Waterman/Flatman, is is possible they had an on-board wedding?

Mary Cooke of Ireland married Henry Canvan 28/4/1934 St Nicholas, Liverpool. They had a daughter, Mary Ann b. 2/2/1839 in Liverpool.
Can anyone please find the 1841 and 1851 census for then?

Mary Ann and James Hickson started having children in 1858 or 9 in Liverpool (cant find a marriage)  and more subsequently in Cheshire - Their census records from 1861 unwards are OK.

In 1881 Irish Mary turns up with them as Mother-in-Law - she died in 1885.

Regret to say I cant help you. As I said before the Watt family is a very large one, it would not surprise me if the is a linking relationship.
Based on the info provided there is nothing to link our 2 families.

Many thanks for the info from the 1851 census for Ann Pirie, this gives me a fix on her that I never had before.
Looks like I will have to check out the Gordon Family.
