Hi Jenny,
I am your sort of cousin, twice removed or something!  I knew Great Uncle Ratio, as he was to me, being my Grandad Sam's brother.  Pleased to meet you  :)  Who is your mam - must be lovely Janice I'm guessing ? If so, tell her I am Kathy, Pat's daughter - she'll remember me.  Thanks for getting in touch.  I will be pleased to be in touch with you.  Personal details removed

Hello Mac,

Thanks for getting in touch.  Sorry for not replying sooner, but I haven't checked this site in a while and have only just read your message.

I guess we're cousins of a sort - your grandfather William was the brother of my grandfather Sam (Samuel Robert Barnaby).  Did you know any of the brothers - Ratio, for instance?  Their mother Charlotte Pratt was born in Hunsett Mill, Smallburgh, Norfolk.  You should google it - it looks beautiful.  I can't believe that she left there to go to Gateshead, but sometimes life is like that!

Have you done the family tree or are you looking for info?  I haven't gone way back, but far enough on both the Pratt & Barnaby side to possibly be able to assist if you need any gaps filling in.   I'm trying to learn more about the personal side of their lives, as I don't really have any information about Charlotte or William other than recorded BMD & census facts.  My grandfather spoke very fondly of both his parents, but nothing in terms of their backgrounds or anything.  He also spoke about James Beattie, but in quite negative terms.  :-\

I'm so pleased you got in touch & am happy to share any info/memories.

Kathy

Thank you everyone for your time, effort and help.  I still don't have a definite answer, but you have all helped to clarify this.  I think Matthew & Jane named their daughter Ruth Chicken after the Aunt that Matthew lived with, which sorts that puzzle, and I agree that Matthew was probably a Sailor.
Once again, thanks to all for your input :)

Durham Lookup Requests / Lookup request 1911 census MANNING in Sunderland
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone be able to check the Sunderland 1911 census for me, please?
I am looking for Walter Manning (DOB not known, but circa 1880), his wife Ruth Manning (born 1884 Leadgate, County Durham) and their child Walter Wardle Manning (born 1908 in Sunderland).
Any information would be gratefully received!

Durham / Does anyone enjoy a puzzle?!
« on: Tuesday 09 November 10 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some help with an awkward line where I can't quite work out what's going on and would appreciate any assistance (even guesses)!
Matthew Henry Wardle b.1841 married Jane Bayles b.1844 in Sunderland in 1862.
I have tried to track tem through the census records and this is what I have so far...
1871 Jane in Sunderland as "Tailor's Wife" with daughter Sarah, but no Matthew (and I don't know if Matthew was ever a Tailor - he seems to have worked with engines and suchlike).
1881 Jane in Sunderland as Widow, with daughters Sarah & Louisa, but no Matthew
1891 Jane and Matthew in Sunderland, with daughters Louisa and Ruth (Matthew working as Engineer Fitter)
1901 Jane and Matthew in Sunderland with daughter's Louisa and Ruth (Matthew working as Shop Keeper)

So where did Matthew go?  To complicate the issue, the daughter Ruth was named Ruth 'Chicken' Wardle (b.1884) and I'm wondering where this additional surname has come from, as Jane's family were Bayles, so I can't see why the name Chicken has been added.  Unless...p'haps that explains Matthew's absence?
If anyone is able to shed light on this, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Jersey Families Heraldry/Coats of Arms
« on: Thursday 30 September 10 06:48 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for family history items on ebay and found a batch of Jersey documents -  family crests from 1859.  Apparantly, these are the proofs that were used to create a book called Armorials of Jersey, which was a history of certain prominent Jersey families, such as Dumaresq, Boulier, Langlois and Hamptonne.  These have no relevance to my particular research, as my family weren't so illustrious  ;D but I thought that these may be of interest to somebody.  Hope this is of help to someone out there.

World War Two / HMS Cumberland in WW2
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 20:59 BST (UK)  »
I have just found out that my (deceased) grandfather Samuel Robert Barnaby served on HMS Cumberland in WW2.  I don't have his service record, but would be interested in any information regarding the HMS Cumberland's service in the war and the kind of lives the crew lead during this time, to give me a flavour of his experience at this time.

Thank you,
Kathy

Norfolk / Re: Pratt Family of Hunsett Mill, Smallburgh, Stalham
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 20:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello Nick,

You're right - we're related (kind of)!!  William Pratt b.1816 was Thomas' younger brother and the son of William Pratt and Mary Bustings, so there is a link.  I'm so pleased.

I have done some census searches, but just on particular individuals - I don't have the Smallburgh census info.

If there is anything I can help with, I'm happy to share information.

Kathy
