Hello Linda

Thanks for your interest perhaps then it might be an idea to look at Union Workhouse records in Bury St Edmunds.
Do you know if all abandoned children were put into the Workhouse or were there other places as well?
I have found him in the 1901 Census living as an 11 year old lodger in Bury St Edmunds seems a little young to be living as a lodger perhaps he was working for the head of the household?
I would be grateful for any other suggestions you may have.

Has anyone any idea what a child in the 1890's may have been registered as when it was left presumably at an orphanage.
The infant grew up to be known as Frank Blank but I can find no trace of any birth cert in the area (Bury St Edmunds) where I think he was born.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I am tending now to suspect it may be a theatrical type outfit as the photograph is produced as a postcard.
I agree the belt doesn't seem to fit with the tunic and the shoes almost look like dancing shoes.

Hi Barbara

I have Rebecca Browns birth cert born 1853 Bank Street Bacup. This is where I got the fathers name from as William Brown (Tailor) and mother Ellen Brown formerly Hewitt. The extra name Mary came from her marriage cert where she calls herself Mary Ellen Brown and calls herself Mary Ellen on the 1891 census after her marriage to Thomas Iley.
I also sent for a birth cert for a Mary Ellen Brown 1854 born in Witton  Co Durham but the fathers name is John Brown and interestingly also a Tailor and mother Ann Brown formerly Atkinson. I have wondered if Ellen was taken on by her uncle William and his wife after something happened to her real parents but have never been able to think of any way to prove or disprove this theory.
Any ideas ??

Thanks Sammybil
