« on: Thursday 01 January 09 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace details of my uncle HAROLD CLAYTON who served in South Lancs Regt.  I understand he had a leg wound from fighting in France WW1 but know nothing else - other than he survived. because I knew him well as a child

I can't find him in WW1 records so far

Can anyone offer any tips or help.

Hi - just wanted to say thank you to all the people on this site who are helping me in my search for war records of Harold Davis - KOYLI WW1

Still have some way to go I imagine - but now have more than I had ebfore I joined the site last weekend - and have posted other topics in hope.

Seems to eb a good move I made - and if I can ever manage to use it properly am sur eit will be helpful interesting and even fun.  Family history can be a solitary occupation - so this site seems ggreat for sharing problems.

Thanks a million - everyone who is or has doen their best for me.

Have ordered two copies of the book Ady recommended and used the advice from all the others

Good Hunting - keep up the good work everyone

A grateful newcomer

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Rosa Elizabeth (Rose/Rosamund) Oxley
« on: Wednesday 13 August 08 10:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I have lots of detail on Rosa born c1866 Wells, Somerset - but cannot find her aged about 15 in any of the 1881 census records.

I have her widowed father and some siblings still in Wells but no trace of Rose - I have records of her before this date and afterwards again 1891/1901 etc  by which time she was married to John Davis - but am completely stuck on 1881

there is a family rumour that she may have been in South wales in Service there - but am doubtful on that with regard to all her other records??

I am now desperate - any help much appreciated.

FH Documents and Artefacts / SILK PHOTOGRAPH CONSERVATION
« on: Tuesday 12 August 08 22:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have a silk photograph of my grandmother c1905/6 - it was taken from a photograph of her carried by my Uncle when he travelled to the Far east with the Merchant Navy early 1900's.

They somehow printed it on silk and it was beautifully framed in wooden oval frame - still in it - but glass was broken over 40 years ago and never replaced

Obviously the picture would need some cleaning up now I should think -and there is a little tear in the fabric.

I am frightened to touch it myself - and would probably never be able to re-frame it nevermind clean it properly.

If it was like the one of my father when he was about five years of age - it came with a sort of backing cover and rolled up in tube shape.

My sister had that framed and her daughter has it now - but that was done from scratch as it were and a long time ago now.

Any advice on where to go would be most welcome - i have trasured this picture for years and hate to see it get ruined.

Thanks

Rita

Hi

many thans for info - I only joined rootschat three nights ago - so not used to it all yet - having said that - I posted my first question on WW1 or something similar - and within  twelve hours two of the regulars had helped me locate some records and passed on their sound advice - so looks as though I will enjoy it.

Thanks again

More advice please

I have a photograph of my grandmother c1906 or so - printed on silk and still in original "mahogany" frame   My Uncle was in the Merchant Navy early 1900s and did the Far Eastern runs - so had it done there.

Unfortunately the glass was broken a long time ago - so obviously the silk will be dusty and there is a little tear in the fabric.

Is it possible to get this fixed by a restorer anywhere - does anyone know?

I assume we can order it by post - not living close - but will phone or e-mail the museum tomorrow.

Many thanks again
