Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Olive Gigg
« on: Monday 12 January 09 19:38 GMT (UK)  »
I looked her up on ancestry.ca and that's the info that came up for the 1901 census.  I'm just making assumptions at this point based on dob.  I'm most interested in who her parents might be - Ellen & Sidney Gigg.  I ran nto some roadbloacks with them so I'm working backwards from some census data from ireland in 1911 which places the family there.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Olive Gigg

Could someone please look up Olive Gigg in the 1901 England Census?  She was born in 1893 in Somerset and in 1901 was residing in Sussex.  I am interested in this person ONLY IF her parents are Sidney and Ellen, and she may have other siblings - Harry (or William Henry), Ivy, Flossie, Bertie, Violet.

Thanks so much

Cork / Re: Sidney & Ellen Gigg, Youghal 1911 census

I do have his service record and he actually returns to Devonport after 1910 and eventually retires from the RN a few years later.  Is it possible his wife could have been a caretaker for that period?

I do have a marriage certificate c. 1892 but I am having difficulties confirming if this Ellen (Bidgood) is actually my relative.  There is a story behind Sidney's connection to the Bidgoods so I've been assuming some details as I forge ahead to see if anything I uncover may prove that Ellen is indeed my ancestor, and Sidney her husband.

Unfortunately there are no records for them in the 1901 census for anywhere in England, but I did find a census record for Sidney in 1901, stationed in Cork with the coastguards, so that fits.  It will be interesting to see what data is available once the 1911 records are released.

Thanks for your feedback.

Cork / Sidney & Ellen Gigg, Youghal 1911 census
« on: Wednesday 07 January 09 21:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information about Youghal around the time of the 1911 census.  My ancestor, Ellen Bidgood, may have married a Royal Navy man by the name of Sidney Gigg.  Sidney was posted in Youghal from Feb 1906 to Feb 1910.  I did locate info on Sidney and Ellen Gigg, and their 5 children, as having lived at 1 Church Street in Youghal at the time of the 1911 census.  Along with this info, the word "caretaker" also appeared.

Since their time in Ireland would have been pre-WW1 is it possible that Sidney could also have been employed as a caretaker while serving in the Navy and being stationed in Youghal?

I have no specific questions at this time, I'm really just reaching out to anyone who may have info or links that I might find useful to help get me started on this new leg of my search.

Thanks

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Gigg Family of Membury/Axminster Devon

I am a bit late with this update...a person at the records office said that Ellen Bidgood's father's name did not match what they had on the marriage certificate to Sidney Gigg.  I did order the mc and as it turns out there are no fathers' names listed for either Sidney or Ellen so it is still quite possible that this is my relative.

I also ordered a copy of Sidney Gigg's military record and though very interesting, it has not helped to pinpoint Ellen as my ancestor.

Does anyone know if census records were kept for military personnel?  It will be very interesting to see what the 1911 census holds, if anything.

Also, does anyone know if death records for British Royal Navy personnel are open to the public, and if so, how might I go about locating info on Sidney, who seems to have spent his remaining military days based out of Devonport.

Thanks

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Census 1901 - Ellen Harris

I tried the 1901 census, but no luck.  The Harris surname is just a hunch, and one that I didn't have high hopes for.  Thanks anyways

My situation is similar to Pat's - I have an ancestor who had an illg child and that child took her surname.

But then her widowed father remarried, and subsequently died, so the last known info I have for my ancestor is that she was living with her stepmother.  There is speculation that each woman re/married, but I cannot find any trace of my ancestor beyond 1891.  I will have to do some searching using her stepmother's new married name.

Thanks to all of you for your feedback.

Devon Lookup Requests / Census 1901 - Ellen HARRIS
« on: Thursday 06 November 08 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone please check the 1901 census for an Ellen Harris, living in the Devon area (sorry, I can't be more specific on the place).  She would be approx 30 yrs old and may be living with her son William Henry "Harry" and he would be about 14.

Thanks
