:)Hello Christopher and Loraine:
I appreciate your information. Christopher, I will drop each of the Burns listed a letter to see if there is a possibility they are somehow related.
Loraine: Thank you for the information about the Sweet shop run by a Burns.  I will see if I can find it on the web.  Or through the directory of Killyleagh.

LisssaM:  I tried to look on he US Emigrants board but did not see what you were referring to, maybe I just didn't look in the right place.  Can you steer me in the right direction, please.

I have have not been doing much with the Burns end of my family lately, as school is starting and seeingthat I work at college we have been extremely busy getting ready for the students return and I have also been doing family research for a friend and tracing her family for her which I just finished yesterday.  Now it is my time again to concentrate on the Burns family one more time.  Thank you all for the information I promise I will follow up on it.
Gail
P.S.  I think you guys are the greatest, I have never been to a site that is more helpful

How does one get obits and from where?  I guess you can tell I am more or less a newbie at this even though I have been working on it for a few years it has been more or less hit or miss or a big Oh Yea I found something moments.  The State Vital Records are far away for me to try to research and they do on line but unless I have specifics and can prove I am related I don't know if I can get them, but will give it a shot.  As far as local genealogy, just what are you referring to?   I know that I sound really dumb asking these questions but in reality I just don't know much about doing research except trying those places that I know which is not much or many.

That is the whole problem in a nut shell.  I really don't have any idea as to where they came from or if they were married prior to coming to the US or after they arrived.  I guess I will just keep on plugging away in hopes that I find something.   I have already tried to reach the person that Shelly mentioned in regards to the tree in hope there might be a lead there.  Hopefully they will answer soon.

Hi Shelly and LisaM and all that helped in the search:
I believe that I am totally confused at this stage.  Buy I know that I have been able to trace my father Francis J. Burn with Brother John M.,  to his father, Francis P. Burns, to Edward Burns of Tolland, CT.

I was in touch with another Gail Burns who was doing a family tree on Burns (Edward) she  had married into the Burns family.  Her husband was the great grandchild of John J. Burns, son of Edward and Mary, of Tolland, CT but she was not able to give me a lot of information other than John was born in NY as was his sister and that the whole family moved to Tolland, CT.  That is where I found them in the census.  As I tried to trace Edward and Mary back I could not find them in NY but did not have the access  and the knowledge that you people have, as to how to look for them.  I also had trouble reading the date of entry to the US.  I have not been able to find their entry into the US anywhere.  I didn't know to keep the birth and marriage date checked so that I could trace that way.

I did know that my grandfather moved to Hartford Ct after he married and that is where my father was born, then they (he and wife and son) evidently moved to Massachusetts, for that is where his brother my uncle was born in Boston but I have not been able to find out where they lived or when they left Massachusetts for Florida.  I do know that my father died in Florida along with his parents and brother.
I have the death records of my grandparents from Florida and my father and his brother in Florida as well.  I was able to get my fathers Army records which gave me his father's and mother's names along with other information.

I will try to get a look at the family tree that you speak of Shelly on Ancestry,  You all have given me such great information and I truly appreciate the time that you all took to look into this for me.  Maybe now I will be able to find his parent in Ireland if it turns out to be a good trail, which it looks like right now.

Again, I cannot thank you all enough, you have stirred me into action again.  I had almost given up trying to find any more than the bits that I had.  But I have learned a valuable lesson here, which I think is Keep digging and somewhere someone will lead you to the information you seek.

Hello Everyone;
Sorry I'm been unwell and unable to answer all the messages.  Heavens to Betsy you all have given me a lot to look and and figure out I cannot thank you enough.  But where to begin?  Oh well, I would rather have too much than not enough.  I will try and digest all of this.  Did not know about the two trees but I will definitely check them out.

But was wondering if anyone had found any information of Edward in Ireland?  When he left as my information from all the US census I could find each one of his dates of entry change, depending on what census I look at.  That is why it is hard for me to trace him in Ireland and get his parents and siblings and get their names, and any information as to when he really left there.  So if anyone can find that it would be fantastic.

But I really appreciate all that you have given me and I promise I will be back with more questions than I have answers  But then isn't that always the way it is when we try and find our lost relatives.

God bless you all for all your help you will never know what this means to me,  I really cannot believe all that you all have found.

Down / BURNS of Killyleagh - 1863 (Edward and Mary)
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 21:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone:
I am looking for information on my g-g-grandfather Edward Burns, wife Mary D.  He is from Killyleagh, Down, Ireland.  He was born 1864.  He emigrated to American between 1880-1883.  He married Mary D (I do not know her maiden name although I would like to), I do not know if he married her before he left Ireland or when her arrived here in New York.  They both have the same birth year 1864.
They had two children while in New York, (where I do not know) but then he settled in Tolland, Connecticut and was a mill worker, which makes sense since there were mills in Killyleagh and it was a trade evidently that he knew.  They had 10 children.
If anyone can give me any information on his parents from Killyleagh or close by I would appreciate it.  I have been up against this brick wall it seems forever.  I just found out about his being from Killyleagh yesterday, and am very excited.
Hopefully, someone out there knows something about this family that will help me keep going.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Gail

US Completed Requests / BURNS-from Killyleagh, Down, Ireland to New York
« on: Saturday 19 July 08 21:03 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the emigration of Edward Burns (my g-g-g-grandfather) and wife Mary D. Burns (don't know if he was married before he left Ireland) from Killyleagh, Down, Ireland to New York  around the year of 1880-1883.   I know that they settled in Tolland Connecticut.  And that he was a Mill worker.  I have that information but I have not had much luck tracing his entry into America or back in Ireland.  I have just found out that he came from KILLYLEAGH, Down Ireland.  I am hoping someone can help me locate his trip to American.  Also if he came with wife Mary or if he married once here in the states?  He was born in 1864. I do not have his parents names either so any help there is much appreciated.

Any and all help will be much appreciated and if there is anything I can do for anyone I am willing to try.

Thanks much
Gail :D
