Happy New Year too. I didn't have down that William R and Catherine Gordon also had a daughter called Charlotte.

My "relationship" goes through their son George and his son David (1840) who married my grandmother's sister Jean Lindsay of Tannadice. David Rough in Geelong, Australia (with whom you have been in contact before) is descended from George's brother William.

It would be nice to try and make the link - I have been concentrating on my Arbroath and Gamrie ancestors and have not looked at the Lindsay side yet - but I will check the other MIs in Angus to see whether I can come up with anything else.

By the way it seems that Catherine Gordon died on 4 March 1855 at Fletcherfield, Kirriemuir. I haven't looked at her death extract which would give the exact address, plus also who registered death (probably on of the children) - it should also give her husband - but he was probably deceased. Anyway, maybe I will look this up out of interest.

Regards

David

Further to this - I just looked up births of William Rough, parent Andrew (and/or Moncur) in ScotlandsPeople. I was hoping it might show the William who was the father of William born 1804. Adding Moncur or Catherine didn't bring up anything - but leaving her out, there were two for Angus - both Glamis as it happens, but not so old. One was William Rough born 25 Oct 1816 father Andrew Rough (no mother given) and the other was William Henderson Rough born 14 Deb 1851 to Andrew Rough and Ann Drummond.

I didn't want to waste more credits to view the full details of especially the former.

Hi Billy,

In case you didn't have it, there is a gravestone (no. 19) at Glamis the Memorial Inscription of which reads:

1876. And. Rough (died) 10.7.1842 (aged) 53, w(idow) Cath. Moncur (died) 11.9.1851 (aged) 62. (Stone erected) by family.

Stone 20 says:

And. Rough, Plans of Thornton, (died) 22.2.1887 (aged 74), w(idow) Ann Drummond (died) 30.4.1890 (aged) 70, da(ughter) Ann 23.10.1867, gs (grandson) Wm. Rough McLean d(ied) at Plans of Thornton 17.7.1878 (aged) 4.

David Raitt

PS - actually I am on a different screen - what was the question again? I have down that William (b 1 aug 1804) in Glamis to William Rough and Catherine Godron - he (Will Jnr) married Helen Wilson in 1839 and they had several kids, one of whom was John to married Mary Wilson Smith in 1895.

Hi Billy,

My connection with Ian is through the David and George Rough mentioned - and his tree was useful to fill out some really distant relations - but they were only peripheral - my interests are more in the Lindsays of around Kirriemuir and Tannendice - that is my mother's family line. If you have anything on them then......

Thanks very much Kirsty. According to my records James Scorgie and Isobel Sangster (who died Hill of Cotburn in 1873) had at least one son called Alexander (b Gamrie 1820) who married Isabella Kelman in 1843. They had
quite a few kids - one of whom was called George (b 1863 - also one born 1869) and another called Jane (b 1866). These might be the ones you mention. Isa might be either the Isabella Kelman (or even Isobel Sangster) mentioned above or her daughter Isabella (b 1854). Geordie I suppose is George. I don't have any mention of a Sally.

Another of their sons was Alexander Scorgie (b 1848 in Easter Bonnyton) - he moved down to St Vigeans, married Anne Smith and had my paternal grandmother!

Anyway - thanks for your help - I know what it's like to come across these old clippings and things. Two of my great grandfather's brothers (Raitt) emigrated to the USA in the mid-1850s and I recently came across my American cousins and they sent me some newspaper clippings and a journal one of them wrote about the arrival in the new land!

My David Stormont was born in Arbroath in 1873 - Fiona Garrett's family tree lists a lot of Stormonts from Arbroath area and some might fit - see www.fionagarrett.com. My line goes through Mary Stormont (1801-1886)

I came across an old map of Kirriemuir from 1861 recently on the NLS site - http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/kirriemuir.html

Hi Billy,

One of my ancestors Jean Lindsay from Kirriemuir married David Rough in 1905 - his father was George Rough (1806-1881) from Glamis. I have some other information on these Roughs from Ian Rough in Australia.

Hello Kirsty,

In your note of 10 March, you mention Scorgie - can you tell me what information you might have about them please. Also - anything on Kelman or Sangster - or Lawrence? They would have been from the Gamrie and Turriff areas.

Thanks

David
