Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: William Phillips b Cumberland abt 1813
« on: Wednesday 31 July 13 05:37 BST (UK)  »
Just been referred to your 2009 post from NZ Trade Me Geneology site.  I have William Philliips b Cumberland 1813 d Barnawartha Australia 1896 in my tree.  I am related to his second Australian marriage - Mary Mc Lachlan nee Beggs b Catrine Ayrshire Scotland.  On their marriage cert William's parents are given as John and Margaret nee Barnes.  John was a wheelwright and William was also, as well as being a soldier.
His children to Bridget Moore were John (1852-1923), Alfred b 1853, William Henry (1854-1918) &Mary Elizabeth 1856.  His son to Mary Mc Lachlan was Richard William (1860-1925)

I too am seekiing evidence of his first marriage in Great Britain - must be circa 1833-1836.  He deserted army in Oct 1836 and was captured in the December before being court-martialled in Jan 1837 and sentenced to 14 years transportation.

The person I am working with regarding this is Heather Birch - her email being as follows:-
* - she is descendant of William Henry.  Bridget "ran away" from William and took up with a chap by the surname Fry - had second family!

South Africa / Re: WILTON Paul & Mary (nee Child)
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 09:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Sorry dor delay in replying - been in Australia.  No, have very little details.  I am descended hru his brother.  Some of the family came to NZ mid 1840's and huge number of descendants.
Book researched and published.  There was contact from a descendant of Pauls in the 1970's but details sketchy and at that time it was uncertain whether there was a connection to the NZ family.  The contacts name was I believe Temperance
(Christian name), and whether she had the Wilton surname is unknown.  The time period for shipwreck would I think be between 1800 and 1830.  Noeline Larkin :P

South Africa / WILTON Paul & Mary (nee Child)

Above gent born Montecute, Somerset, England 1780, married around 1802
and intended emigrating to Australia, but got shipwrecked near South Africa and ended up staying there.  Very little known since then.  Descendant contacted New Zealand descendant of his brother in 1970's, but contact lost.  Descendant's name was something like Temperance.  Any info and help appreciated, as no clue as to where in South Africa they settled.

Hi Daylight, Yes I am aware that William Speirs Bruce was his brother.  My husband actually visited the Antarctic station he set up ( now run by the Argentinians).  This was in 2009 before he was aware there was a family connection.  He purchased a book written by him about polar exploration and originally published in 1911. Hi Sandra, I'd forgotten what had transpired on this earlier posting.  Looks as though I,m back to square 1 regarding Bernard.  Good news however is that I have discovered full set of descendants of Clement born 1824 - in Sydney and Melbourne Australia.  He evidentaly landed there around 184 :)9.
Many thanks for your help.  Noeline L

:D  This gent is shown as living with parents Joseph & Hannah at Prestwich Lancashire in the 1841 English census.  At that stage he was unmarried.  Suspect he went to America, married and had a family, becoming a farmer.  Got this hint from a census.  Need firm leads to descendants.  Any help appreciated.Noeline L

Will have another look - had contemplated contacting the Kinney tree owners.  Got a reply from the Chula Vista library acknowledging my request for any obits for the Bruce family, but could be several weeks before they can get to my request.  Many thanks for your assistance and interest.
