Hi Dorothy!
Thanks so much for your reply. This Breckon family has got me totally stumped - far too many children and wives (23 or 26 kids and 2 wives!) and people with the same names.

I have three generations of Thomas Breckons, but none of them seem to match with your dates: (Yours would have been born in 1814, yeah?).

1. Born: 1781, Egton; Died: after 1851.
2. Born: 1825, Whitby; Died: ?
3. Born: 1844, Whitby; Died: 1859.

Do you connect with any of these?

I also have two generations of Hannahs:

1. Born: c. 1812, Scarborough.
2. Born: 1832, Whitby.

Does this resonate with your information? I'd still love a copy of your certificate, if that's OK; I don't think I can offer you much in return though! I'm sure our families tie in somewhere, but for now, I'm still stumped.

Cheers,

Nikki.

Hi Ray,

Wow! Thanks so much for making contact – it’s great to hear we apparently have the same ancestor!

I haven’t done any research for over a year now, but I am happy to share what I have. For now, I’ll just cut and paste from my files and see if this is useful to you.

The small copyright symbol simply means that I have the certificate. I have summarised those certificates I possess, and corrected any obvious errors. As you can see, I’m missing her birth certificate. From memory, I did try to find it, but had no luck.

#27. ELIZABETH JANE WALKER (nee BRECKON)
Summary:
Born: c. 1829 or 1825, Whitby, Yorkshire, England.
Married: 11th Feb. 1853, to MATTHEW WALKER, Hartlepool, Durham ©
Died: 28th September 1901, Charters Towers, Queensland. ©

Details:

Marriage: Whitby, Yorkshire, England at 25 years, to MATTHEW WALKER.
Children: JOHN THOMAS (40), HANNAH JANE COATES (37), MATTHEW (34), ELIZABETH (31).
Burial or cremation: 28th September 1901, Charters Towers Cemetery.

Censuses:
I did also find her on the 1841 Census aged 13 and born in Yorkshire. She is living with her father Thomas (butcher aged 60) and what I presume is her mother Hannah (the ages show some discrepancy) and a host of seven siblings. I could not find her in the 1851 census where she still would have been single, not marrying until 1853 and thereafter, she would have been in Australia. (I did manage to find some of her siblings in one or two later censuses).

So, I hope this of use. I’m curious as to how you descend from her, so please write details!

Cheers,

Nikki.

P.S., What part of Australia are you in? Most of my family descended from the Breckons are in Queenland.

Hello Clive,

I hope you didn't go to too much trouble to find that information.

Unfortunately though, it seems from what you say, that this is not my direct line of Breckons. My Hannah's father was Thomas a butcher, not Robert a solicitor. Pity! I did see a reference to this Robert in the 1840 Whitby directory for trades and professions, and there are only a couple of other Breckons listed, so chances are they're all related somehow, so having that information would still be of interest if you don't mind sending it. Excuse my ignorance, but what's a "PM of my address" and also a "PR"? I'm new at this! I did find it really interesting that you say you found a record of a Breckon going back to 1643.

Thanks so much for your very kind offer to photograph Westleigh, but it's not really relevant to my research. I'm glad Whitby is so sunny - it must be beautiful. Melbourne is freezing at the moment!

Anyway, thanks so much for your trouble.

Cheers,

Nikki.

Hi!

Thanks a lot for the reference to Jeff Knaggs' site, and no I didn't know about it before. It is a wealth of information, and will be useful for some of my other research as well!

I'll let you all know how I fare with the Whitby Library. So far, I've only checked out their site to see what they have online.

Cheers,

Nikki.

Hi again,

Thanks anyway for that. I just thought I'd ask on the off chance that you had a copy. I didn't realize this was in 1995 - the date just says "05", so I'm surprised you remember anything about this at all!

I shall definitely contact the Whitby Library to see if there are copies of the Gazette, so thanks Charlotte for the suggestion. I really appreciate your input.

Best wishes,

Nikki.

Hi Cass,

Thanks for your prompt reply and glad to hear you sorted out your Hannah!

I'm just wondering if you have a copy of that death notice, as I still believe it to be my GGG grandmother's sister. I will still try to find it if you don't have it, as it may give me a clue as to the mother of my Hannah.

Good luck to you too!

Nikki.

Hi there!

I’ve just started tracing my family tree and have found Breckons from Whitby, so thought I’d contact you.

From the dates given, Hannah was born around 1831, and seems to be the same one that appears on the 1841 census with parents Thomas (born c.1790) and Hannah senior (born c.1811). If I’ve gotten this correct, my GGG Grandmother Elizabeth Jane Breckon (born in Whitby c.1827) is her older sister or half sister.

I have been trying to find out more about the family, in particular, who Elizabeth’s mother was, and because there’s only a few years between their births, they could well have the same mother. Things are complicated by the fact that her father, Thomas Breckon, the local butcher and Inn Keeper, was widowed twice and married 3 times, fathering a total of 26 children. (I know all this from a historian’s research article, which although focussing on her husband, Matthew Walker - related to the Walker family in Whitby who apprenticed Captain Cook, gave some background on the Breckon family).

Did you manage to find that death notice and do you have her death certificate yet? I do know that Elizabeth immigrated to Australia some time in the 1850’s and ended up in Queensland. I’d love to hear from anyone who has connections to this branch of the family and will be happy to share any information I have.

Cheers,

Nikki.
