New Zealand / Re: Whaling and whalers in New Zealand waters
« on: Wednesday 09 April 25 02:26 BST (UK)  »
My 2x great grandfather Captain Owen Davies (Davis) was a whaler out of Hobart working for Charles & Phyllis Seal on numerous whaling boats but the "Sussex" was a ship that was well known in New Zealand waters.  He was also the first Harbour Master at Whangaroa and he married for a second time to Hariata Tarahau Hongi, a daughter of Hare Hongi 11.   You might come across mention of him?

Cheers

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Will of 1686 - Grace Spooner

Thank you so much for that information.

I have been trying to make the names in that Will a little more readable, but I don't have the expertise to try and make it 'clearer'....so I'm very much appreciative that you have managed to find that illusive name!.

Thank you so much.

Kind regards

Thank you both for your replies....I had thought that Elizabeth may have married prior...but of course I haven't found anything that fits.  In fact, I haven't found a marriage for her to Edward Langridge either!.  So I will try and sort out the resolution.

Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Will of 1686 - Grace Spooner
« on: Tuesday 19 November 24 06:55 GMT (UK)  »
Afternoon,  the attached Will is from Grace Spooner.  Her two daughters Elizabeth Langridge (wife of Edward - which I can't find either!) and Grace Earle wife of Thomas Earle (my interest in this line).  The items refer to her grandsons:  Thomas,  William and Granddaughter Grace......but I just can't work out what their surname is?  Certainly doesn't look like Langridge - so I'm stuck as to what it is.

The Earle side is fine, I can read that part.....just that missing surnames for the above.  Hope someone can come up with an idea for me.  Will also save me another headache!!.

Many thannks!.

Surrey / JOHN PURVIER, COBHAM, SURREY

Afternoon everyone.

I have tried to figure out what the word next to the above John Purvier's name is!.  Hope someone can give me an idea?  There were at least 3 John Purvier's in Cobham around this time and of course trying to sort out which is which!.  I've made the snip larger so you may be able to get a look at the way the priest wrote.

Thanks in anticipation!!.  ;)

Afternoon everyone

Here's another small problem that I would appreciate for someone who may know what the "L"means at the end of the marriage of Ann & Richard Adams ( All Saints Parish - 1701).  I've seen this a few times, but couldn't find out what the symbol actually means.

Best wishes

Thank you so much for your detective work with finding Bridget's name.

Bridget's husband Richard didn't die until 1645 so it appears that John was a widower as well.  Now the big question....where did they marry? They are not mentioned in the SMI, but thats not to say they could have been missed.

Time to check the online data for around that time.  St Clements seems to be the parish of choice for the family but you never know!.

Once again, my sincere thanks.
