Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Where are/were these places?
« on: Thursday 16 April 15 02:36 BST (UK)  »
There's a "Cluster of Nuts" which seems to be a farm between Altham and Clayton le Moors, near Gt. Harwood.
http://maps.nls.uk/view/102343952#zoom=5&lat=9567&lon=5607&layers=BT

When viewing this map, Cluster of Nuts is situated to the left of the K which is part of the word Blackburn of which only the letters A C K and B are shown.

I'd hazard a guess that the road on the old map to the right of `C of N` is the A678, Burnley Road on a map of today.

Hello Landyman,

I am assuming Joseph stated his birth place as either Over/Lower Darwen or Darwen.

It's possible that Joseph could have been baptised in a chapel in the Darwen area (not currently on the Lancs OPC site as mentioned by Garstonite) eg Pole Lane / Ebenezer.

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Over-Darwen/lower/index.html  explains that Lower Chapel in Over Darwen had a large congregation which split after the death of Rev. Robert Smalley Snr in 1791 and members joined the other chapels in the area namely, Pole Lane, Ebenezer and Duckworth St Chapel. You'd need to use your search engine to find out where the registers for these chapels are kept.

However, there is a Joseph Walmsley on https://familysearch.org/search   born 7 Nov 1795 ( Pole Lane Chapel) son of Joseph and a Joseph Walmsley baptised 10 Dec 1795 Pole Lane Independent Chapel, Over Darwen son of Joseph and Peggy who could be your man and possibly one and the same person.
I used Darwen as a place of birth with birth years ranging from 1792-1799 on familysearch and only the Joseph shown above came up, but it does depend on where Joseph stated he was born/came from and if it was consistent.

If Joseph was born in the Darwen area, there is a wonderful website, darwendays, with lots of photos and info which I found by using "Pole Lane Chapel Darwen" in my search engine.

http://www.darwendays.co.uk/index.php/galleries/churches/pole-lane-chapel#!RECORD_OF_MINISTERS     shows that Pole Lane opened in 1793 and Ebenezer Chapel in 1822

Hope this helps,

Lancashire / Re: Un-readable Birth Places
« on: Saturday 29 March 14 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

The 1881 census shows that Edmund Ashworth was listed as Edmund E Ashworth aged 1 living in Edenfield district with parents Joseph Ashworth aged 33 a stonemason and Elizabeth A.

If you check:-
 http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi

Edmund Ernest Ashworth was registered in 1879 in sub-district Edenfield which is under the the Hyndburn region, mother's maiden name Ormerod.
Other children registered in Edenfield with mother's maiden name Ormerod are as per your list:-

David in 1881
Wilfred in 1886
Joseph 1888
Harry 1891
George 1894

Jack and Clara are listed under Hyndburn- Rawtenstall A 1st, mother's maiden name Ormerod
Jack 1895
Clara 1898

The marriage Claire t found in 1876 does look to be the correct one.

Also if you look on the Mormon website re George Ashworth born in 1894, there is a death cert viewable where George is listed as born 28 May 1894 passing away in Mission, BC, Canada in 1969 husband of Elizabeth nee Moran. Parents are Joseph Ashworth and Elizabeth Ann nee Ormerod.

https://familysearch.org

and
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Edenfield/

will help you familiarise yourself with the Edenfield area.

Hope this helps,
Anne

Lancashire / Re: Gorringe, Shoe makers in Westhoughton
« on: Thursday 27 March 14 02:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
The trade directory for Westhoughton (1902-4) is listed on the Lancashire OPC site. It shows a

Robert John Rigby,  Boot Shoe & Clog Maker of  1 & 3 Chorley Road.

from
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Westhoughton/directory1902-1904.html

In 1901 Robert John Rigby, a 40 year-old born Liverpool was living at 1-3 Chorley Rd., Wingates, Westhoughton working from home as a boot, shoe and clog manufacturer and employer. It would seem that the boot and shoe business was already established on the Chorley Road premises before the Gorringe family moved to Wingates.

In 1891, 1 Chorley Road was home and business for William Marsh, a grocer whilst 3 Chorley Road was just a dwelling house for James Clarke and his family.

Westhoughton Library may have some old photos.
