Ready is a variant of the surname Reidy. Luckily for you, neither name is very common in Co. Mayo. Suggest you check Griffith's Valuation for townlands where this surname appears in mid-1800s.

What else do you know? Did both father and son live in Ireland their entire lives? Did both die in Ireland? Where did you get approx date of birth for Frederick?

Have you looked at the distribution of the surname Baker in Griffith's Valuation? See http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

If you can pin down a townland, you could then search the census of 1901 and 1911 for the family.

I'd suggest searching Griffith's Valuation in County Mayo for the surname Noon. Usually you can search at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/lrgrif.html but that seems to be down today.

Not sure if this helps, but if you check the distribution of the surnames Noon and Noone at http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ they were most common in counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

Cloonboo is about 12km north of Galway on the Headford Road.

About 90km away are Mountshannon and Clonrush on the Galway/Clare border and on the shores of Lough Derg, a few miles apart. You will find Mountshannon and Cloonboo on Google maps at http://maps.google.com.

If you want to precisely locate the townlands suggest you use the 6" OS maps on the Galway County Council web site - http://www.galway.ie/en/Services/Library/1842OSMaps/#place. You will probably need to download the SVG plugin and can only view the maps in IE.

I don't think Ballylangley as there is no indication of any part of a lower loop for the "g." Ballybailie seems more likely. The final three letters seem to be "lie" or "lis," there must be a letter after the "i" as there would be no Irish placenames ending in "i."

It would be good to compare this to other handwriting samples by the same person, to see how they formed the letters b, l, h and k elsewhere.

If I wasn't trying to figure this out and match it to actual placenames, I would think it reads Ballybrolis, but there is no such place.

Just wondering if the Kenny family of Ballinrobe was related to Marcella Fitzgerald Kenny of Clogher House near Lough Carra, Co. Mayo. She was the last of the family and died in the mid-60s. I've no connection to the family, just an idle curiosity as I grew up not far from there.

Hi Jacqui:

I sent you a couple of e-mails about the Sullivans.

Now I've gone back to have a second look at Bridget Butler of Middle St, Galway. I think that you probably looked at Griffith's Valuation for Walter Butler and found Walter Butler and Patrick Butler in Claggan. Walter and Patrick were brothers and Walter was the mother of Brigid Butler (1855-1928).

You said Bridget Butler of Middle St, Galway married Martin Ryan in 1871 and Walter Butler, Middle St, Galway is listed as Bridget's father. There are 14 Walter Butlers listed in Griffith's Valuation, but the only one in Co. Galway is Walter Butler in Claggan. I wonder does this mean that Walter Butler moved to Galway sometime between 1856 and 1871.

Although Walter Butler of Claggan is known to have been married twice and we think he had children from his first marriage, it seems unlikely that there would have been two Bridgets born around the same time.

I will send you a spreadsheet that shows all the Butlers listed in Griffiths Valuation.
