Europe / Re: Henry (or Heinrich) Galland

Thank you Bob.
There was never anything said in my family about any other Galland relatives coming to UK.
Although you will find that many German Gallands are recorded as being Catholic, surprisingly Gallands were originally Huguenots (French Calvinists).   So I would expect to find Gallands having come straight across the Channel in the 17th century as well as those fleeing into Germany or Holland.
The idea of looking at naturalisation records is interesting and I'll try that next.  That might give more details of my grandfather's home town or family.

Europe / Henry (or Heinrich) Galland
« on: Saturday 05 July 08 14:48 BST (UK)  »
My maternal grandfather, Henry Galland (probably christened Heinrich) was born in 1866 in Westphalia and appears in the UK 1891 Census.   Don't know when he came to UK.  Have been trying to trace his records in Germany via IGI, but have only found the following, the first of which is not the same birth year and the second of which is not the same name.

HEINR. WILHELM GALLAND
Gender: Male Christening: 17 JUL 1858 Katholisch, Castrop, Westfalen, Preussen
FRIEDRICH WILHELM GALLAND
Gender: Male Christening: 16 JUN 1866 Katholisch, Castrop, Westfalen, Preussen .

Found these two without too much bother but was unable to navigate IGI's Family Search website to get any further.  Any ideas?

Dorset / Re: Derby winning jockey of 1862 , on Caractacus

Hi Valda

The 1901 Census info tallies.  My grandmother was Rose Parsons, nee Fruish.  They did live in Blackstock Road - more Finsbury Park than Stoke Newington, although Stoke Newington would have been the ecclesiastic parish.  My father's birth cert shows his father as being a Journeyman Cabinet Maker.

As far as the 1891 Census is concerned, the ages of both James and John Parsons make sense because if James was 16 in 1862, then he would have been 44 in 1891, and if John was 17 in 1891, he would have been 27 in 1901, which again tallies.

However, my father, who died in 1992, said that his grandfather,  who rode Caractacus to victory in the Derby, was John Parsons.
He never mentioned a James Parsons.

May I ask, what is your interest in this matter?  I was expecting to hear from s/gordon.

Regards

Am posting this for a second time - not sure if it worked first time.

My father, John Henry Parsons, told me that his grandfather, John Parsons was the youngest jockey ever to  win the Derby, riding a horse called Caractacus.
My father was born in London in 1900 and his father, 27 at the time, was born in St Albans.  Could be a connection here?
