Completed Census Requests / Re:1901 Census - Missing Name - Army?
« on: Monday 22 November 04 04:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there Cee-Gee

If grandma was born in 1888, then I would have thought that grandad would have been about the same age - making him about 13 in 1901; That would have been to young to be in the Army.

I looked on the 1891 census for him assuming he was about grandmas age - there was only 2 Robert Widley in the whole country; one was 30 years old and the other was 3 years old - see details below.

RG12/ 59/ Folio 172/ Page 37 – Number 47, Godfrey Street, Chelsea, London
WIDLEY  Robert, Head, Marr, 30, Boot maker, Kensington, London
Mary A, Wife, Marr, 29, Dorking, London
Edith R, Dau, Unm, 7, Chelsea
Robert A, Son, Unm, 3, Chelsea
Frances M, Dau, Unm, 1, Chelsea

Hope this fits in with your research

My grandfather and his brother both joined the army at the age of 12, as boy soldiers, so the 13 year old could have been in the military.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Which Quarter ?

My GG-grandmother's death is listed in 2 consecutive quarters on the FBMD.  So do I just give the year, volume and page? Or do I explain the discrepancy?

My Ggran named her daughters Daisy, Rose, May, and Lily.

Her sons were Arthur and Charles.

You might find a Rose these days, but the others are much less common.

Just posting a follow-up. IF Ruth was Canham, then Joseph and Ann are her grandparents, and John and Hannah are her parents.

Problem: 8 children. On 4 certs Mum is Ruth CANHAM, on the other 4 she is Ruth CANNON!  I think, from other information, that the Canham is right, but my cousin insists the Cannon is correct.

I love this job!  ;D

Hey, I've got an Artificial Inseminator on my tree.  I guess he made them and yours fixed them?

I also have a Tinner's Tools Maker.  What kinds of tools did tinners use?

The Common Room / Re: When did Registry Office weddings become allowed?
« on: Wednesday 17 November 04 19:23 GMT (UK)  »

My G-Grandparents were married 'by certificate' in a registry office in 1890.  I found them on the BMD, and ordered the certificate.  It arrived in western Canada less than a week after I ordered it!

I,m named after my Grandmother and her Grandmother and a few aunts.  My daughter is named after me and her daughter is named after her.

Fitty is very poplular in our family you know! <chortle>

seriously tho.. my middle Name is Helena with a funnywotsit on the 2nd E..so is pronounced  Helaina.   Which i was ok with till my dad told me it's a very old fashioned Dutch name and a bit like being called Gertrude or Ethel in England   :-\

I'm glad I wasn't named after my grandmothers: they both had very "period" names.  But my Dutch Ggrandmother was Engelina, which I like.  Her mother was Johanna Catherina, like the previous 3 generations!

My granddaughter has 3 given names.  Two her mother loved, and the 3rd because my mother asked to have the baby named after a sister who died in childhood.

My daughter agreed to the sister's 2nd name, because not for anything would she name a baby 'Florence'!  So the 3rd name is 'Rose'.
