Would just like to say Hello to Betty.
I doubt you remember me but I remember meeting you once or twice a long long long time ago. ;D

Dangers, yes I am still in contact with Margarets Daughter.
I spoke to her after your last post here and sent a link so she can see/read for herself.

Of course the brother I am thinking of is Jimmy and not Michael. I am such a muppit, when talking on the phone I realized my mistake before I had even started to explain. sorry for any confusion.

Sandra

Yes her name is Margaret that is her in the pic outside the cottage in Kenagh.
I took the photo way back in the 70's
She was married to Brum whose real name was Brian I think.
They had 3 children, Brian, Michael and Valerie.
Sadly both Margaret and her husband are no longer alive.
One of Margarets sisters, Esther, was married to Tom.
They lived in London, Finsbury I think.
We used to travel by train to Finsbury, stay overnight with Tom and Esther, then Myself, Valerie, Margaret and Esther would get the train to Hollyhead. From there it was the night boat to Dun-laoghaire?
Train to Dublin where Michael Finn would be waiting to transport us to Kenagh.
an epic journey.

The Michael Finn I knew was a well built, sturdy gentleman, with white hair. He was always smartly dressed in a brown suit.
He would hold everyone captive whilst telling one of his stories in little more than a whisper.
we would all sit around in silence waiting for the punchline.
His eldest ? son Michael c 1955 was also a curly haired, rosy cheeked, strapping lad. who liked to recite a rhyme about breaking wind!
He would come to the cottage with his friend Frank Carberry, from new castle or newtown cashell or somewhere similar.  en- route to the pub, just up the road on the other side of the church.

son Davids c1960s-1980s death was linked to the Shannon.
in addition to the children I listed previously I vaguely recall twin girls who were about 7yrs old but dont know their names.
Also a much older (married) daughter Brigit or Brigid.

Brigit/d Finns cottage, as I remember, was next to a church.
The dog in the doorway didn't belong to anyone. It was a stray that wouldn't leave us alone.

Having said all this, I wonder if we have the same Michael Finn as I dont recall a Nellie at all.
Regards
Sandra

I am sure there are many Finn,s from Longford but your post leapt out at me.
Back in the 1970's as a teenager I travelled 2 or 3 times to Longford with my best friend and her mother and aunt to go visit their family.
My friends mothers name was Margaret, she had 2 sisters Betty and Esther and a brother Michael Finn married to elizabeth (betty)

The sisters Margaret, Esther and Betty all married and lived in the uk but Michael and his family remained in Longford they would have been born around 1920-30 I guess.
Michael and Betty had many children, the biggest family I had ever come across.
some of their childrens names I remember were; Brigit, Michael, paddy, PJ, David and Esther. David met a tragic end in his mid to late teens in the mid 80s
We used to stay with my friends Grandmother Brigid/t in her tiny, primitive cottage in Kenagh co Longford she was in her 90,s at the time, smoked like a chimney and used to bribe me for cigarettes threatening to unleash the evil leprechaun that lived in the roof on me if I didn,t supply her with 20 Camels a day lol (I was 13/14 and shouldnt have been smoking)

I doubt this info is of much use. your post sent me off on a trip down memory lane.
Good times!

Catherington/Horndean is on the doorstep of Waterlooville.

Hello, You prob know this already but just incase,
Waterloo became and still is Waterlooville. there was an Industrial school there (Stakes Hill, Waterlooville) around the time you mention.

Dateline 1875

WATERLOOVILLE with STAKES formerly an extra-parochial village, was in 1858 constituted a parish, and named Waterloo. Waterlooville, during the summer, is filled with visitors from Portsmouth and Southsea, attracted thither by the purity of the air, which is particularly suitable for those who require a more bracing atmosphere and yet one that is adapted to weak chests.

The church of St. George is in a mixed style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with a small square tower containing 1 bell.

The register dates from 1836. . It is expected a school will be opened during the present year (1875).

At Stakes is a school, supported by John Deverell, esq., and subscriptions; also a large Government Industrial school.

The population in 1871 was 283.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Charles Benfield
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 15:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hey Nell, Nice to see you again.
It is possible he lied about age for any number of reasons...or maybe he didn't know for certain how old he was.
looking through the death records I found;  :'(

Sophia Harding c1775 - June 1846
Sophia Binfield  c1821 - Sept 1846
Charles Binfield c1821 - June 1847

all Basingstoke

If those are his Parents and Grandma or grt Gran even, then young Henry would have been an orphan at/around the age of 6yrs.

That might explain why There is no mention of him anywhere as far as I can see untill he pops up in Winchester barracks around the age of 17-20 ?

I suppose it could also explain the surname variant....again though it all seems a bit tenuous.

Also Judi and Laird mention a 10yr old Henry Binfield with Father Charles in 1851?  ???
(unless of course the Charles that died 1847 wasn't his father but a different Charles, thus leaving the two of them to go visiting the Taylors in 1851) (maybe Ann Taylor was his sister?
I will have a delve for an Ann Binfield.

Hey all, Thankyou all for looking and for your suggestions.
Very much appreciated.
A new train of thought always throws something new into the pot.

I have spent the past 48hours going round and round in circles again with this one.
Henry and his father Charles Benfield/Binfield/Banfield/Bonfield bloomin pain in the backside field lol!

I came to a grinding halt about 4 or 5 months ago with them and kind of laid them to rest.
Someone contacted me a few days ago with a connection to Henry and Charles and indeed had Charles at the top of their tree as Binfield married to Sophia Harding 1839.

I looked up the marriage and trawled through the census records again hoping to find a Sophia with either Henry or Charles. I did find a 65 yr old Sophia Harding with a 6yr old Henfy Binfield in 1851 which confused me even more.  but still cannot find any concrete proof that Charles Binfield is Henry Binfield Father, or even whether Henry Binfield is my Henry Benfield.

I fear I shall go around in circles forever more with this pair...

I have just gone back and had another look at the Sophia Harding  age 65 with Henry Binfield.
It is 1841 not 51. and he is 6 months not 6 yrs.
anyway they are right at the top of the page.
HO 107/385/4
on the previous page sitting at the bottom are Charles and Sophia Binfield both age 20. all from and in Basingstoke.
That still doesnt make 6month old Henry Binfield the Henry Benfield I am searching for though arghhhh! :-\

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Charles Benfield
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 16:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hey all,
any help with this would be appreciated.

Henry Benfield b1844 in Basingstoke Hants. married Eliza Oakley b1854 in Portsea Hants 1872.
The year before his marriage, Henry appears on the 1871 census as a private in portsea.

On his marriage certificate it gives his residence as Wish Lane portsmouth, the same as Eliza.

His fathers name is Charles Benfield, occupation Brewer.
I have no idea of Henrys mothers name or whether he had siblings.
I can't find anything definate that puts a Charles Benfield and son Henry b1844 basingstoke together on any census.

Can anyone help?
am I missing something obvious?

Regards Sandra
