Galway / Baptism/Census help!! - Belinda (Nappy) KING
« on: Friday 07 May 10 06:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am hoping that someone may shed some light on where to go next in my search for my GG Grandmother Belinda (Nappy) King.  I know most of what happened to her once she reached Tasmania but nothing of her life prior.  I have found her conviction and sentencing on the Grangegorman Prison Register.

Conviction: 10 Apr 1849, County Galway, Ireland. Sentenced to 7 years transportation for "killing
sheep with intent to steal same".
Tried and convicted with her sister Catherine "Kitty" King.
Transported to Tasmania on the Australiasia with her son "Izod Darcy King" aged 6 months and her
sister Kitty.

She is listed on the prison register as 20 at the time of her conviction but on the Australasia's Ships Prisoner Log she is listed as 26 so that would make her birth date somewhere between 1820 and 1830. (1823/1829).

As she was tried in County Galway does that mean it was likely she was born in County Galway?

Any suggestions on where to look next - I would love to find out more about her.

Thanks in advance
- Helen (South Australia)

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: CLARIDGE & DENEHEY Surname Lookup Please
« on: Sunday 29 June 08 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Heywood and Joburg,

I hadn't considered that Denehey could be incorrect as Mary Ann's surname.  Could it have been recorded so incorrectly?

Mary Ann Denehey is the recorded name on the birth certificate for Mary Ann and William's son Thomas North Claridge.  Was her accent so strong that they heard Denehey instead of Dabney?

I am very confused and not sure how I would go about verifying the name now?

Any suggestions?

Thanks Helen

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / CLARIDGE & DENEHEY Surname Lookup Please
« on: Saturday 28 June 08 06:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching my CLARIDGE and DENEHEY Ancestors and have hit a road block with a Marriage for William CLARIDGE and Mary Ann DENEHEY - my gg grandparents and also a birth for MaryAnn DENEHEY.  The details I do know are as follows.

William CLARIDGE
B: 25 August 1827, Little Rissington
Father: - Charles CLARIDGE
Mother: Charlotte PALMER

Mary Ann DENEHEY
B: ABT 1824 - location unknown
Father: - unknown
Mother: - unknown

William and Mary Ann married sometime between 1851 and 1855 as they are listed as married on the "Assisted Immigrants to Tasmania 1841 to 1889" Michrofiche at the Archives of Tasmania.  However, William is still listed as living with his family in the 1851 England Cenus and Mary Ann is not listed as a household member.

They arrived in Launceston, Tasmania in 1855 on the ship Raleigh - Mary Ann is listed as 31 and William is listed as 27.

Mary Ann may also have been known as Margaret as she is listed as Margaret in the Will of William in 1896.

The information I am requesting a look up for please is as follows -

1. Marriage date and place for William and Mary Ann
2. Birth Date and Parents Names for Mary Ann/Margaret DENEHEY

Thank you

Helen (South Australia)

Thanks Sue,

Could be a match - reading the convict records is quite difficult, the writing is very stylised and because they are photocopies the image isn't as clear as it could be.  Cannot make out Ann or Mary as a sister though.  William was was 33 when he was tried at Wells, Somerset in 1845 so his DOB would be ABT 1812.  James - on the list you sent is 20 in 1841 making his DOB 1821 - that is a big gap between children.

Do you know if I would be able to get a copy of William's conviction record from the Quarter Sessions at Wells Somerset?  Not sure how to go about it.

Thanks Helen

Somerset / POW Surname look up please
« on: Friday 27 June 08 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I hope I have the correct list with which to request this look up.

I am researching my great, great grandfather William POW.  William was transported to Tasmania in 1846.  He was sentenced to 15 years for stealing.  On his convict record it states his native place as "Near Bristol" and he was tried in Wells, Somerset.

He is listed as being married with one child, which is interesting as he remarried in Tasmania and started my family line.

From what I can make out from the writing he lists his family as

Wife - Mary
Father - William
Mother - Elizabeth
Brother - James
Sisters - Elizabeth, Martha and Eliza

If I have the correct list for requests, could someone please look up William POW for me?

Thank you in advance and please let me know if any further information is required - I don't have much more.

Helen (South Australia)

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the welcome.

My gg grandfather name was William CLARIDGE - he was born in Little Rissington in England in 1827.  He married Mary Ann Denehey in England but date is unknown.  He died June 9, 1896 in Ulverstone, Tasmania. I have been told a fair bit of information and have grandparents x 8 - back to 1645.  I am now just starting to verify the inofrmation I have been told.  The Aus-Tas roots web list has been extremely helpful with all my research too.

I was told that William came over as part of the indentured workers scheme and went to work for a Mr. Archer.

I cannot find William on the passenger list for assisted immigrants to Launceston on the below link but have sent them an email to ask if they could check for me.

I was hoping that someone else may have been researching this too or have some information to help.

Thanks and Regards
Helen

Hello,

I am new to the list and am wondering if anyone can assist me with a link to find a list of immigrants from Engalnd to Tasmania under the Indenture Scheme.  My great, great grandfather is said to have come to Launceston on this scheme but I have hit a dead end.

Thanks
Phitzy
