Hi, back after a long time away, and looking through this again

aghadowey, you wrote on this post the place might be Porterstown in Co. Donegal but that it's the local name for an ear rather than a townland name.

What do you mean by an ear ?

Thanks, Warren

Looks like Porterstown but there no townland in Donegal with that name that I can find. There are 5 Porterstowns in Ireland in other counties.
See www.thecore.com/seanruad to search for townlands in Ireland. Be sure to change default setting from exact match. I searched for townlands in Co. Donegal ending in 'town' with nothing coming close and then townlands in all Ireland ending in 'terstown.'
Other possibility is that the place is Porterstown in Co. Donegal but that it's the local name for an ear rather than a townland name.

Hi Rita,

Sorry to hear about your husband, hopefully you are coming to terms with it a bit more. I agree, we must find out about the village in Germany where John came from, and its one of my main objectives in researching family history as well.

The only thing i've really found out in connection with this is that most of the Ulrichs in Germany came from Nuremburg so maybe there might be something there. Of course John might have come from somewhere else in Germany. When I find out I'd like to go over and see where the village was.

I'm back in Ayrshire just now, it'd be good to get a copy of your Ulrich family tree if you can get one.

Cheers,
Warren

Hi

The info about John is about my great great grandfather, John Ulrich

Gadget -

Concerning the different info on John's marriage and death certs, do you think that the info on the marriage one is more likely to be correct as he was alive then to make sure the right info was on there ?

Also, do you have any connections to the Ulrichs yourself ? or are u researching this just out of interest ? thanks in any case

Below is some info I received from member Bluedoo (Rita), who is also a ulrich by birth and related to John as well :-

Cheers,
Warren

Did your Mum stay in Gardrum Place, Onthank because I remember meeting a Jane who went to Kilmarnock Academy, she was the first Ulrich I had met outside our immediate family. Your father's brother John had a son Ian who got this guy to do his family tree and now I have a copy, my brother had 2boys Colin and Brian and Audrey and that's the lot for our side living in Ayrshire they don't appear to be very fertile.  I met your G gran Janet when she lived with her daughter who was married to a McLung, I was starting to trace my family and she could tell me how many children there were and what John was like apparently he came here with his brother but his brother returned home a few years after marrying Jessie he was homesick and went back to the village (Janet said this) where his family lived but neither the village or his family were there and so begins the struggle to find from where he came.
