It's all changed a bit recently. You can get the Irish material through the World Collection on findmypast UK, and you can get the UK stuff on Ireland through either the UK and Ireland collection or the World collection. As far as I can see, most but not all of the UK data is there - certainly much more than just the census and BMDs - and they said they were working towards having it all there by the new year.

Why bother waiting? It's been complete on findmypast for well over a year and the transcription appears better.

Thanks very much - I'll give it a go, although Ancestry seems to be down right now (seems an increasingly regular occurrence).

How do you search photos on Ancestry? I've never seen this search facility.

thanks

Things I don't like about the site:

- as others have mentioned - the wildcard search doesn't work - an asterisk mid-name reads as a space and obviously gives no results.

- year of birth is only +/- 1 or two years.

Haven't they said that these restrictions are only temporary? They deliberately restricted the search to make sure the site could cope on launch, and plan to introduce these as soon as the demand abates a bit. Think I read this on the site or in an email.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1911 census Beta on Find My Past

Seems a little harsh, Gadget, - they made it clear that it was limited counties availablee on the beta pag, and from their updates it sounds as though they're still scanning the documents at Kew. Why should we expect everything all at once?

Maybe I'm biased cos the vast majority of my rellies are London and home counties (though there are enough Lancs to keep me in suspense), but given that I expected to wait until 2012 I'm EXTREMELY grateful to get my hands on whatever they can throw at me...

I cant find Twickenham in London or Middlesex. Can anyone else find it? Or would Twickenham appear under some other location?

Hi Paul, I think Twickenham may count as Surrey, so there's hope yet...

They have explained about the search restrictions on the site on the blog (http://blog.1911census.co.uk:

'Wildcards and other fuzzy search features
December 20th, 2008

A lot of people have fed back that searching the census is not as flexible as it could be! There’s a good reason for that - at the moment some search functions are deliberately restricted. This is to allow the site to deal with more queries immediately after it goes online in 2009, when it is expected that there will be huge demand from people trying to access the service.

The majority of people will be able to find at least some of their ancestors with the current search options. However, as soon as the demand has  stabilised, we will release updates to the site to turn on searching with wildcards (including an initial wildcard), provide NameThesaurus variants, and will also lift the restriction that requires users  to use a surname for a person search or a street name for the address search. When these restrictions are relaxed it will be *much* easier to find the more elusive ancestors.

Sorry we can’t open these up to you for the moment - however, we need to test the site as it will be at launch. We will email everybody who is registered on the site the moment new features become available after launch, so make sure you register.'

So it looks as though we'll have to wait a while for more complex searching.

Cheers,

Tewin
