I am in the middle of a search for the family of one...Isabella Harley Cowan born Scotland we think as married and lived in Edinburgh ...Husband William Gray born 1905 so we assume she was born about same time as family members remember her as about that age...As this family in this thread contains both Harley and Cowan I am hopeful that their may be a connection....thanks

Hi

I see from my information that I have a James Harley born 1815 in Pilgrim, Fife, who married Catherine Bringans. They had 9 children: John, James, Isabella, Jane Young, Catherine, William, Robert, Janet and Mary. As there is an Isabella in amongst that, it might be worth a closer look.

All the information I have on Isabella is that she was born 1844 in Alloa, Scotland and was residing at 7 Drysdale Street in Alloa in the 1851 Scotland Census (Parish: Alloa; ED: 1; Page: 13; Line: 28; Roll: 1002; Year: 1851) and she was listed as being a scholar.

Another possible connection could be to Isabella's sibling, Jane Young Harley born 1846 in Alloa Scotland who married John Cowan. They had 5 children (that I know of): Alexander, James Harley, Ellen Leetch, Catherine H and John. I am from the Ellen Leetch side of the family but looking at this information - it may be worth looking at James Harley as he appears to be the only one of the family who kept the Harley name.

Hope this helps - if you want any more information I have, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks
Elli

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: BENTLEY - PRE-1886 - ANY INFO HELPFUL
« on: Sunday 30 November 08 07:27 GMT (UK)  »
Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to posteria. You have found out so much information about the Cowan side of the family that is great. I have been able to locate all of the things and some extra bits so thanks so much.

I wonder whether anyone has been able to find anything out about the Bentley side, so John William Bentley and Sarah A Baynes? I have found that Sarah Baynes had parents called Joseph and Eliza but cannot find what Eliza's maiden name is. I have searched and it has given me 5 different possibilites and I cannot figure out which they are. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can figure out which one belongs to Joseph Baynes? Baynes is sometimes spelt Baines too.

Thanks again though posteria, you're a star.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / BENTLEY - pre 1886 - any info helpful
« on: Tuesday 25 November 08 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have the following information and wondered whether anyone could help to fill in the gaps? I have most information after 1886 so anything before that would be a great help.

John William Bentley (b. Mar 1863 Pateley Bridge) married Sarah Ann Baynes(b. Sep 1862 Scotton, Knaresbrough) Dec 1887 Leeds. They had son Thomas Albert Baynes Bentley b. Dec 1886. I have assumed because of the dates that Thomas was born before they got married so took his mothers name initially then after marriage they added the Bentley on the end. Just an idea but not far-fetched I don't think? On the 1901 Census Thomas is listed as Albert.

Q1 - I cannot find any other children from John and Sarah so if anyone can find any I would be grateful.
Q2 - I cannot find when either parent or child died.

Charles Bentley (b. either 1825 Pateley Bridge or 1827 Bishopside) married Elizabeth ????  They have 6 children as per 1871 Census.

Q3 - I cannot find Elizabeth's maiden name which is therefore also proving difficult to find her ancestors too. Any info?

Thomas Albert married Ellen Leetch Cowan (b. Jun 1877 Chorlton) on Sep 1906. I have no information regarding her at all. They had John William Baynes Bentley (b. 23 Feb 1907 Pateley Bridge) who is my grandfather.

Q4 - Ellen Cowan - any information gratefully received.

I would like to thank anyone in advance for their help.

Would be grateful to hear from anyone who is related to this family too.

Hi, I hope this reaches you.
May I ask what relation you are to Thomas Albert Baynes Bentley? The reason I ask is because he is my great-grandfather. I have quite a lot of information already on him.
He was born approximately Dec 1886 as Thomas Albert Baynes in Leeds: I have made the assumption that he was born before his parents married and therefore took his mother's name, Sarah Ann Baynes, originally and then when they married, they added the Bentley on to the end because none of the family before him has the name Baynes Bentley. He married Ellen Cowan in Sept 1906 in Chorlton, as you mentioned, but I am struggling a little to find when he died. In the 1901 Census he is listed there as Albert Bentley.
My grandfather is John William Baynes Bentley, born 23 Feb 1907 in Pateley Bridge, married Kathleen May Browett on 2 Sept 1943 in Oakham, Rutland and died 18 Sept 1962 in Oakham.
He also had a first wife, Rosina Flowers and a child, Irene, married Sept 1939 in Hammersmith, but unfortunately they died in the First World War.
I would be really grateful if you would respond as you seem to be the first person I have come across which seems to be related and still alive!

Caernarvonshire / Re: CROWTHER WILKINSON

It's not quite as easy as it may sound - George William's father was called Crowther and then George William took on the name Wilkinson when he joined the army! Some of the descendents have both names, some are hypenated, some only have one of them and amazingly more likely to have taken the Wilkinson part instead of the Crowther!
It's taking some doing but I understand where your coming from Bronnie!

Thanks Deb D that brilliant.

Something else that I have stumbled on is where is George William in 1861? I have serached every census record I can find to locate him and he doesn't seem to be anywhere. I have found that I think his mother died in 1852 and his father in 1859, his sister was staying with their aunt and his brother was a lodger with the Evans family but I cannot find George or his other brothers anywhere. Wondering whether he enlisted earlier than he should have for his age????

That is brilliant, it has given me a lot of help thanks. Now I just need to see whether I can find out when they moved to Australia.

Thanks a lot.
