Thanks for looking for me Celia.  Yes there are lots of Ann Chesters out there -  I just can't find an Ann that fits the right criteria!

Only ten days to go before I leave for England so will have to step up my search.
I'm not sure it's even worth going to the records office in Chester because I'm not sure where else to look.

I was wondering about a ramble around grave yards like St Mary's on the Hill or St. John the Baptist but this may be an unproductive way of searching.  Is anyone here familiar with Chester and those locations?

Cheshire / Cheshire Death/burial - where to look?
« on: Wednesday 15 October 08 20:10 BST (UK)  »
I've had no luck tying to find a death record for Ann (e) Chesters b.1799 Chester.  Father John Chesters.  Unmarried as far as I can tell.

In the 1851 census she was recorded as unmarried living in a Chester almshouse on Commonhall St. with her son George.

By 1858 her son had enlisted in the army in Liverpool and in the 1861 census was stationed in Essex - but I can't find a record for Ann in the 1861 or subsequent census reports.

So far I've checked death and marriage records in:
- Free Reg (the death record I sent for (Ann d.1872 Chester) was the wrong Ann.)
- Cheshire bmd
- CPRdb
- Overleigh cemetery surname index.

Her family seemed to be connected to the parish of St. Mary on the Hill seeing as all the family baptisms took place there.   Is there a graveyard there?

I supposed it's possible she either moved from Chester or married - (though no record found of that either) - but being of limited means it seems unlikely.

Any suggestions where else I could look?

As I'll be visiting Chester next month I had hoped to find the grave- it if exists .

You have been so helpful kathb - my brick wall has crumbled!! Thank you so much for your time.
I'm fairly certain now that the first Edward you found must be my Greatx3 Grandfather who didn't do the "right thing" by my Great x 3 Grandmother!  Unless there is still more to the story!
Off to hunt for bastardy bonds now!  ;)

This has been very much appreciated!

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 census lookup please: Edward Chesters

Good to know!  I thought that's possibly what had happened - a entry error either from the original recorder or the transcriber - but didn't know how to do the wild card search thingy!  I'll remember that in the future!

No rush - I've been chipping at this brick wall for months now so a little longer makes no difference!
I really appreciate the help you've given me.

Brilliant!  Thank you so much! That would be the Edward Chesters I've been hunting for. (For the last 9 months!)  Later in the 1871 census he gives his occupation as Saddler and the other family members fit.

Now whether he's the same Edward as on that baptismal certificate I still can't prove for sure.

Would you mind checking the other Edward in Bunbury so I can rule him out.

The only other piece of evidence I have to go on is that on his son George's marriage certificate in 1864 he lists his father Edward as a "coachman".  Perhaps "saddler" is close enough!

I really appreciate your help in solving this puzzle!

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 census lookup please: Edward Chesters
« on: Friday 03 October 08 04:50 BST (UK)  »
Can't find an entry for Edward Chesters in the 1841 census but maybe a fresh set of eyes will have more success.

In 1836 he's recorded on his son George's baptismal entry (Chester: St. Mary on The Hill) as a "Post Boy" living on Crane St. Chester.

George's mother Ann is listed in 1841 census as living on Crane St. with her father John Chesters and her son George - but no mention of Edward.

There are entries for an Edward Chesters b.Chester 1813 (or 1819) in the 1851 1861 and 1871 census reports (married to a Margaret Ince in Liverpool 1844) but I have no proof this is the same Edward as on George's baptismal record.
I suspect he could be given the clue that he lists his occupation in the 1851 Tranmere census as letter carrier for the Birkenhead post office.

I really need to find out where he was in 1841.  Can anyone help?  Any suggestions really appreciated!

Cheshire / Re: Cheshire Parish Records Marriages only pre 1837

Thanks Jean and Stan for your replies.  Good information to know.
Obviously divorce was not an option for these two given their occupational status (post boy and dressmaker) - if indeed they were ever married.  Will take my puzzle over to the main boards!
Thanks again

Thank you so much for this Stan. Exactly the info I was hoping for!  And what a great photo of Chester!  I can't wait to see the City for myself.   Just discovered my ancestor's family also lived on Foregate St at one time so the pieces are all falling into place.

Thanks again!
