Caernarvonshire / Re: Thomas Smith Bethesda
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 00:06 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the links they will be very useful  :)
No I haven't confirmed Thomas Smith on any census prior to1881, I did find his marriage to Grace Edwards June 1877 Bangor 11b 881 but when requested the cert from Bangor registry office they said they didn't have it  :o and Everton Registry office failed to supply me with Grace Edwards birth cert even though I had the date 1852 and her father was Daniel a mariner and her mother was Elizabeth aaaaargh so frustrating :'(
so I think it's back to the drawing board for me.
Thanks again for your help  :)

Caernarvonshire / Thomas Smith Bethesda
« on: Thursday 06 November 08 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi ,
My great grandfather Thomas Smith has said on each census return that he was born in Bethesda Caernarfon c1843, but I came home empty handed after a visit to Bangor registry office as he wasn't registered there! Gutted  :'( He married Grace Edwards in 1852 ( I am awaiting the certificate so I will at least get his father's name,) I just wondered if there is anyone researching the 'Smiths'? and could suggest why he's not registered at Bangor.
Also Grace's father was Daniel Edwards, Mariner. I have found him on 'the smack Pearl'  I know that this vessel floundered off Penmon and three crew were saved. I don't know if he was one of those three but I know Daniel lived after this event.  I welcome any suggestions/help on how I can find out more about mariners, boats etc of that time He was living in Llanfair is Gaer Port Dinorwig.
Diolch

I've now established that Mary's maiden name was also Thomas, so the marriage I'm looking for is John Thomas to Mary Thomas circa 1827 Thanjs  :)

We only moved to this house 6years ago and really love it it has a great 'feel' about it that makes me keen to learn about who lived here and loved this house and the old cottage before.
Delving into the past is so much more than piecing together a puzzle don't you think?
Newspapers are a great idea too thanks  ;D

Yes the chapel and graveyard are actually opposite The Manse (my house) so next time I see the caretaker I will pop over and see what records are still there , if any.
I'm surprised to hear that burial record may tell more than gravestones, but will keep that in mind from now on thanks :)

Thanks Monica, am hoping to go to Brecon soon and find his and Elizabeth's graves, they may give some more info, and yes you're right I need to search the parish registers and I will at the earliest opportunity. (oh to be able to give up work!) I am intrigued why he should go to Brecon as he doesn't seem to have been particularly skilled. :)

Looks like it's a weekend in the local churchyard for me!
So silly that I never thought of doing that, many of the properties around here are very old so all I need is a name and a house/farm name from a headstone and this should get me close in the census. yay
You lot are fantastic. Thank you
