He George Fletcher Holmes took the name Fletcher not because he liked his stepfather better but because his stepfather got him Into boiler - making at cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour
( ship building) . He and his brother went back and forward crewing on boats as boilermakers to San Francisco a few  times before his marriage to my great grandmother Margaret. May have been to visit siblings and Father. It could have been William Fletcher who came with children on the “ Sarah Abigail”

I think there is some confusion on George Fletcher Holmes b. Circa 1845 . According to his Australian  Marriage  certificate 1866 his mother signs Caroline Gager. It is believed she may have been of Scandanavian origin not born in UK nor Ohio. On Georges death certificate says father Hotel Keeper - San Francisco. Details re the other 3 children arriving are correct. Can’t find Australian death cert. for his father John. Caroline Fletcher l’s death certificate May  1880 says she has 13 children??

Thanks a lot Ken, I cant get into Find my Past - not a member.  5.00 pounds doesnt sound a lot but in 1820 I understand it would have been worth about 450 pounds, certainly enough to buy a house and start a business.  His son came to Australia as a convict a few short years later.  Sad they would have never seen him again.   Very surprised with England in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars that he didnt serve overseas thought that they would need "diggers" etc. rather than swanning it back home in Woolwich while his compatriots gave their life in the War.  Believed the need for "all hands on deck" must have meant that he was left home for a reason.   Would he have lived at those Impressive Woolwich Barracks I remember photographing years ago?  Thank you for your help on this one. :) ???

Thank you Ken, the person I wanted to contact was away on school holiday.  I found out he was born in 1782 in Audlem to John Dykes and Elizabeth (nee Bullock).  He joined army in 1800 (we think) and went to Woolwich.  What we would like to know if we could find out what he did in the army for 20 years as a Sapper and Miner.  Did he go to War?  My guess that it was the late 1800's he joined was certainly way out. Thanks a lot.

Thanks Dawn and Jo Rose.  Yes wish someone would get there act together as far as records.
I was only asked the question where she was buried/cremated after I had a longish talk to the son.
Did not want to be a nuisance to him and its another family's interest.  Cheers Carol
PS Would love to wander down the Strand again, unfortunately 10,660 miles to go to get there.

Hi Ambly, nice place that Godzone!!  Got a houseful at my d.i.l's her Mum and stepdad are over.
The information you gleaned Ambly has enabled me to contact the oldest son and we have exchanged a lot of information.  Now to email the folk in the UK who were so keen to find out about her.  She was a "darling". Cheers CArolyn.
PS. The Opera singer was Barbara Cook and she looked after the little daughter.
Pet names can certainly throw a curly one but as you say, you are used to them. Thanks a lot. ;D ;D
