Hello, Try looking up Waleran Flats, Old Kent Road.

I used to go past there on my way home from work.

You might come up with something using Flats instead of Buildings.

Hello,

There are only 16 miles between Wolverton (Bucks) and Northampton (Northamptonshire) itself, it seems there may have been confusion over which county Wolverton is in definitely Bucks.

Hello,

Just reading through this thread, the spelling should be Gray's Inn Lane, it is now Gray's Inn Road. You can google the road and the history of the area running from Holborn up through Clerkenwell is described. This info might help in your quest.

London and Middlesex / Re: Italians come to England "Little Italy"
« on: Wednesday 19 October 11 12:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello, Many moons ago, I worked for the Pru just off Leather Lane in an office, we used to occasionally have I believe an italian man who would come and sing at the top of his voice - opera, the windows would be opened up and coins were thrown down to him in the street, it was a lovely memory. His voice used to echo because the main building and the office I worked in bounced the sound around. It was a very exciting time, and Leather Lane was a thriving market in the late 50's early 60's.

I did work again nearby in the 80's and the whole atmosphere has changed. The hustle and bustle had gone, along with Gamages where as teenagers we'd go and listen to records in the record department in a little booth.
The world has moved on since then, not sure if for the better.

In the 1st posting, the father's name is quoted as John Earley Wharfinger, the wharfinger is an occupation, someone who looks after a wharf and the goods that are delivered to it etc. which incidentally could be tobacco or any other kind of commodity.

Hope this is helpful.

Further to this enquiry re Manor Street, I believe it is Manor Place in Walworth, in South London. This the area know as Newington for Family history researcher.

If you Google Manor Place Baths theres a lot of info on there regarding the Baths, it had a swimming pool and ladies and gents baths which people used to visit when they didn't have a bath in their own home.

Some of the commments on there may give an idea of times past, there is also a map which shows how the baths are located, I don't know about the numbering of the houses in the street.

Hope this is of some interest

Carol8353,

Just to let you know that the letter will soon be on its way back to Donald's family.
Through the information you gave me, my sister wrote to them explaining how she came about this letter.
She was contacted today and it was confirmed that they are the surviving relatives of Donald, and would be more than happy to receive the letter after all these years. They're thrilled.
Its great when something like this happens, I'm thrilled as I'm sure they will be once they read his words

Thanks again

Hi drewlear,

My grandfather was in the Royal Field Artillery too. The Gnr is most probably Gunner abbreviated, have you tried looking on the National Archives for more info. I believe thats where I found the online details for my grandfather, even down to his eye colour, height,  whether he had any scars in his case he had tattoos. It also gave details of his wife and children and their dates of birth and of course marriage date of him to our great grandmother.
Wish you luck on that.

Hello Carol8353,

Thanks for the info, I had also posted this on BBC family history board. Some of what you've told me is  confirming that there maybe relatives in the Surrey area. In fact the letter was found in the Merton area, so that would tie in, Richmond isn't too far from there.

Will take it from there. I've never had a PM on rootschat, so will it come through as an email to me?

Thanks again for your time.
