World War Two / Searching for WW2 service records......
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 16:19 BST (UK)  »
For a John Taylor, Private 6021161 of the Suffolk Regiment.

He is (was) my grandfather in law.

I believe he saw service in Singapore and was captured by the Japanese. He spent time in a POW camp and so say was one of those POW's who built the River Kwai bridge.

I need his service records to find out when he was freed / liberated and when he would have returned home.

If anyone can point me in the right direction then thank you.

Essex / Wix & Bradfield burials
« on: Sunday 04 January 09 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I understand I have a relation in St Lawrences church graveyard in Bradfield, with no headstone. Similarly, his wife is buried in Wix, presumably at St Marys church.

ERO do not appear to have burial plot maps covering these churches. Is there another way of obtaining such info, or does it not exist.

Regards

Essex / Do you reside / have a knowledge of Bradfield / Manningtree?
« on: Tuesday 30 September 08 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Further to my attempts thus far to uncover family who once resided in Bradfield / Wix, I have approached the Bradfield Parish Council, mainly to see if they can give me any info on the Bradfield village sign and its historical meanings. Also though to see if there is anyone residing in the Bradfield / Wix / Manningtree area who is actively engaged in genealogical research, or anyone who knows of a local family history group??

I thought that while I am waiting for a reply from the Council, I would post here also, to see if anyone had any info either on the sign or was part of any group or doing research in this area. I live in Chelmsford so to join forces with anyone else researching in the Bradfield / Wix area would be handy for me and also possibly for them in respect of ERO visits, as I am right on the doorstep of the ERO.

48 Mildmay Road is still there. From my recollection it is a terraced property.

Essex / BURGESS in Essex/ Tendring area
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 22:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking to trace the parents of an Elizabeth Burgess, born in Essex in 1777, probably Wix or Bradfield but possibly outside those areas. She died in September 1855 in Wix whilst living with her daughter and brother in law, John and Mary Cracknell.

Elizabeth married John Stevenson, born about 1779 again in Essex. They lived in Bradfield, Essex until John died in 1846. They had 3 children, John, Mary and William.

Any information on this family, their parents or descendents appreciated.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / William John Walton
« on: Thursday 19 June 08 17:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm looking for any info on the family history of William John Walton, who died on 3 Sept 1916 on the Somme. He had married Ellen Matthews, who later remarried a Charles Longhurst. I believe William's mother to be a Caroline Walton.

Specifically I would be interested to know if there are any war memorials in the Croydon area which may bear his name. He is buried at Beaumont Hamel Military Cemetery.

Any info would be greatfully received.

Essex / Re: Desperate for advice on how to continue (long!)

Wow, this is great! - funnily enough I just started to do some work on Mary and her husband John Cracknell as I was interested to find Elizabeth Stevenson (John's wife) residing with them in 1851 after the death of her husband. I was trying to get a definitive number of brothers and sisters for Mary, of course there is William and also mentioned earlier on in this thread is a possibility of a John, but I wondered if the Peter I found residing in Colchester was another. I still dont have answers on this but did trace the Cracknell line further and was interested to see that some were mariners. I would be grateful for any info on the Stevensons or the Cracknells - I am on ancestry.co.uk and there are one or two tree matches I have found - possibly you are one of them?
