Hi, many thanks for the reply. I have not been able to eliminate or confirm either. The soldier is possible but of the two, because of the occupation the hammerman is more likely.

Unfortunately I have not been able to connect either William to "William McAra artificer" at the Royal Arsenal 1855 Plumstead Kent or Ann  Brownlee who listed her place of residence at the time of her marriage 1855 as Tradeston Glasgow.

Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to help me connect the dots

Many thanks for the lookup. Both William and his father John were artificers, I am guessing William would have had to apprentice and unlikely he would have been a farm servant. Tradeston had a large metal working industry and I think he would have worked in it. Saying all that I have been unable to find any record of William and Ann prior to 1855.
thanks again for your generosity of time, I am very appreciative.

Mike

Canada Lookup Request / Re: Jane Powell
« on: Wednesday 12 May 10 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi Debbie, thank you for the information.

1891, I have Wm Corby shoemaker in Hendersons Directory living in Lethbridge Alberta.

William had three wives Ann Maria, Eliza Jane and Jane Powell

Every reference I have for Jane is just that Jane Powell or Jane Corby no second name. Most of the information for her is from the 1901 census living in Calgary Alberta with William Corby and children.

Richard Corby is the son of William and Ann Maria his first wife, I have found him married (no date) to Amy (Aimee) in Monroe Washington 1917 applying for USA citizenship living in the USA since 1903. Would be interesting to know one way or the other if it was the same Richard you found in Saskatchewan

Would anyone be able to locate Jane Powell? She came from England to Canada 1891, lived in Lethbridge then Calgary Alberta Canada. Married to WT Corby and died 1901. If she came with family I am hoping to find her parents or siblings. Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

I have located an 1851 census for William McAra mistranscribed as McAree, soldier age 21, 33 Regiment, born Stirling Scotland. As an Artificer he could be a soldier and would explain why he moved to Plumstead, location of the Royal Arsenal.

I have found a marriage for a John McAra and Mary Maxwell 27/04/1831 Parish Stirling County Stirling
No   Date   Surname   Forename   Spouse Name/Frame No   Sex   Parish   City/County   GROS Data
19   27/04/1831   MCARA   JOHN   MARY MAXWELL/FR1618   M   Stirling   /STIRLING   490/ 0070 0073

Also found a birth for a John McAra but it looks like the family moved Crieff and had several other children
No   Date   Surname   Forename   Parent Names/Frame No.   Sex   Parish   City/County   GROS Data
23   16/04/1810   MCARA   JOHN   ALEXANDER MCARA/JEAN MCEWAN FR1500   U   St Ninians   /STIRLING   488/ 0040 0201

Any help or ideas would be appreciated, I have tried to find military records but no luck.

I took his age from the marriage certificate age 25 in 1855,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/dna/mbhistory/F2233810/ext/_auto/-/http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Template/Genealogy/MarriageWilliamMcAraAnnBrownlee.jpg
his death was registered in 1879 age 49,(I dont have the certificate) 1861 census Plumstead he is listed as William Carey blacksmith age 31 born Scotland and 1871 census William McAra smith age 41 born Scotland

In 1851 census there is a William McAra indexed McAree aged 21 soldier private 33 Regiment born Sterling Scotland

In another 1851 census there is a William McAra age 21 hammerman(Iron) born Medlothian ______ looks like Croamond. I think this second 1851 census could be William if a Hammerman is a smith?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
