You learn something new every day. Not a good way to go at all, especially back then.

Thank you, thank you! You are a lifesaver! :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What does this cause of death say?
« on: Wednesday 17 July 24 22:25 BST (UK)  »
I have this digital image of a death registration from Staffordshire in 1878. The image is quite clear and the handwriting is not bad at all yet I cannot work out what the cause of death reads. I have been doing family history for 25 years, am a transcriber for Lan OPC and FreeBMD, so I'm used to reading odd handwriting and even some Latin. On top of that, I was a nurse for 30 years and I don't know what "Sevirhus Ettoi" could possibly be!

Anyone have any ideas?

Karen

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: James WILLIAMS pre-1914 Liverpool

You must have spent a lot of time on this, and I am most grateful. He looks a lot like my Dad, actually and that along with your efforts have made him seem almost real!
I will look into your brilliant idea about getting a better scan - that's definitely a great suggestion.

Thanks also to everyone else who gave this their best shot. I realize I was asking the impossible!

Many thanks, I do appreciate the effort! I realize what a tough one this is. And what doesn't help is that the original picture measures only about 1"x 2" and when you try to make it bigger, it just pixilates out.

It wouldn't matter so much except that as I said, this is the only picture we have of him. He died more than 40 years before I was born, and none of his 12 grandchildren ever even met him. He's just been a name on my Dad's birth and marriage certificates.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / James WILLIAMS pre-1914 Liverpool
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 21:30 BST (UK)  »
This photo in this extremely sad condition is the only known picture of my paternal grandfather. It recently surfaced in the attic of a 1st cousin.
James was born in Liverpool in 1881 and I think this picture is definitely pre WW1. I think I can see a flower in his lapel, so I wonder if it might have been taken at a (his?) wedding. He did marry my grandmother in 1904. James died in 1921.
I even paid someone to have a go at restoring it but the results were less than satisfactory and made him look like a plastic replica of a person.
Would appreciate any and all help.

Kirkcudbrightshire / Re: Photo of grave needed Kirkcudbright Cemetery
« on: Monday 23 January 23 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for the replies! This has been a big help.

To answer Carole's question, I got the transcription from the Find My Past website searching Scotland Monumental Inscriptions. The source quoted there is the Scottish Genealogy Society. I am certain this is the correct family because of the details about the loss of the couple's sons at sea (I have a newspaper acount of this), and the mention of Liverpool. The William who died there in 1836 was my 3x g-grandmother's brother.

Matt, your instructions for the grave location are fantastic. If I or someone I can cajole into it ever get to Kirkcudbright, finding it should be a breeze now! It may be unreadable but at least it's still there.

Thanks again,
Karen

Kirkcudbrightshire / Photo of grave needed Kirkcudbright Cemetery
« on: Sunday 22 January 23 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

My first post on here and I'm asking a favour if anyone can help me. My 4x g-grandparents were Alexander KIRKPATRICK and Marion RAE. I have the transcription of their gravestone in Kirkcudbright Cemetery and I am looking for someone who might be able to take a photograph of the grave for me. I am disabled and live in Canada, so the chances of me getting there anytime soon are slim to none!

This is the transcription:

First name(s): Alexander
Last name: Kirkpatrick
Death year: 1831
Inscription:
In memory of Alexander KIRKPATRICK shipbuilder lost at sea 14/7/1831, 68
Wife Marion RAE 22/1/1834, 67
Sons Samuel & Alexander both died at sea in the prime of life
Son William died Liverpool 30/7/1836,  33
Cemetery:   Kirkcudbright Cemetery

Unfortunately, I don't have a plot number or anything, which I know would simplify things.

Many thanks in advance!

Karen in Ontario
