Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: Edward Mabon died at sea on Ross Khartoum 1973
« on: Wednesday 21 November 12 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
I thought that the people who viewed my posts searching for my old oppo Eddie may be interested in an update.

I contacted the British Consul requesting if he had any information regarding the location of Eddie's grave. He was very helpful and told me that he was indeed buried in the local cemetery at Torshavn. He also told me that a local gentleman and his family 'adopted' the plot and erected a cross with his name and date of Eddie's death. He and his family have religiously tended and cared for the grave from day one and are still caring for it today.
I have received quite a poignant e-mail from him, part of which reads :-

'You probably wonder how it can be that me and my family have taken care of Edward's grave through all these years, but there is a special story which is the reason for this'. Thank you for the pictures, these are the first pictures I have seen of 'My Englishman'.

He has promised to send me 'the special story' very shortly. I am overwhelmed by the kindness of him and his family.

Many thanks for the responses to my request for information. After making some enquiries since my last post I contacted the Central Library who suplied the following information.

"Grimsby Telegraph 12th September.
On Sunday, deckhand Mr Edward Mabon 33, died on the Ross Khartoum shortly after it started fishing off Iceland. His body was transferred to the support ship Miranda and has been landed at Torshavn, in the Faroes, where at his family's request, he will be buried. Mr Mabon, who was a single man whose family came from Newcastle upon Tyne. He had lodged at a house in Caistor Drive, Grimsby for a numer of years. A memorial service will be held in Grimsby on Monday"

If I were you, I would make a post on the Grimsby Fishing board at Ships Nostalgia
http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=6320&page=82
There are several regulars on there who live in GY and have an encyclopedic knowledge of GY and its fishing industry.
If that fails to give you the answers you are looking for, the the Crew Agreements of ROSS KHARTOUM for 1973 are available from TNA Kew
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_q=bt99%2F6171&_sd=yyyy&_ed=yyyy&x=25&y=31
The Crew Agreement will tell you his address together with details of age, NOK etc.

I followed your link but my limited abiity just didn't help my searches.

Thanks for the speedy reply Graham.
It appears as though there is quite a lot of scope to do searches, but I was hoping for an online source to avoid travelling. As the event occurred almost 45 years ago I doubt whether there are any online sources to search. The information I have currently was obtained from 'findmypast' followed up by obtaining a death certificate from the GRO. I don't know if the electoral rolls for 1973 are available to search on line.

Regards
DonM

I suggest that an email or a letter might yield some results.....

Posted request for info last night with automated response this morning.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Edward Mabon died at sea on Ross Khartoum 1973

I've been searching for old RN shipmates for the last forty years and have had  considerable success locating them across the world.

Edward Mabon born June 1943 at Newcastle upon Tyne and served on HMS 'Ark Royal' and HMS 'Collingwood' between 1959 - 1964 with me. I resurrected my search for him only two weeks ago and have found a record that he?? died at sea, aged 30 on the Ross Khartoum 181396 GY 120 registered at Grimsby on Sept 9th 1973. I have the location at sea of the geographic references where his death occurred. The usual residence quoted on my copy of the certificate was Castor Drive, Grimsby. I believe this to be a transcription error and should probably be Caistor Drive approx 4 miles from Dockyard Road. I would be grateful if any forum member has access to any historical newspaper obituaries for the period and copy them for me.

Thx

Inverness / Re: Where are all the McKinnon's?
« on: Sunday 25 May 08 22:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi Lois

We went for a short holiday but we have made several visits since I started my research in 1992. My father and his ancestors came from Benbecula and South Uist. The MacKinnon family are just a small portion  of my connections to the islands. Janet MacKinnon is my 3 x grandmother.

The Outer Hebrides are very beautiful and an extremely popular destination, as are the other areas of Scotland, for all kinds of tourists from all over the world. The weather can be quite fierce in the winter months but early Spring can be very good.
There are several websites which could provide some useful information for you including : -
http://www.southuist.com/index.php?action=readguestbook&set=3 where you will find someone researching MacKinnon amongst other names. It's a free website but you must join to view the members area. This is also another one which may provide some information http://www.uistonline.com/ Finally this may be your best website to find some of your MacKinnon connections http://catriona.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=catriona&view=9&rand=28091332

Good luck and I hope you manage to visit the islands.
