No problem at all.

Will let you know if I find anything.  I can tell you that the chemical plant is no longer there, my husband said he thinks that it is now a water works (slightly worrying if you ask me!).

The area of Wortley itself is right next to Leeds City Center.  The site itself was located next to the roundabout that is at the end of Whitehall Road.  I know people that live in the area so will be asking them if they remember the Mill or know anyone who does.  Fingers crossed that some one does.

Thank you for your offer, if only I could find a link to NZ!!!  LOL I think I would need to do my own research though, excuse for a holiday lol!

Right well off to do some research now.  Take Care

Hi Ivyhedge

I do not currently have any info regarding the Mill but am about to research it as I have just found out that my Gx3 Uncle's children worked at the 'woolen mill' in Wortley circa 1901.

If I find anything out I will let you know.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: The East Hanningfield Mystery

Hi Kath

Was wondering if you stil minded having a little look for me when you go to Essex Records Office?

If so here is what I am looking for although not really sure if enough to go on.

Henry James Harvey Wells - the name is complicated on official documents he appears to give the name Henry Harvey and or Wells (the family name is harveywells but they seemed to use it as they wished) on census returns he uses James Harvey

Born around 1828 approx and gives his place of birth as East HAnningfield, then Romford.

His fathers name was also Henry and he was a Farmer

Henry Jnr married HEster Ann Sharp in 1851 Greenwich.  He had various occupations and moved a round a fair bit mainly the east end of london.

I would be so grateful if you had a look for me, it is very kind of you.  Thanks again Kath hope the weather is not as miserable as it is up here lol.

Take Care

I do have his marriage, although it gets complicated at that point lol.  The marriage is listed under Wills although it is actually Wells (the family name is in fact Harveywells) and his name is actually Henry although he uses James.

I am going to go back over my other information tomorrow and recheck everything see if there was something I missed.  Just thought that since I was advised to try and get hold of the rate book, I would give it a go.

Thanks for all your help.

I know that it is Southwark local studies Library where it would be held, but I am unable to get there at all.  A friend suggested someone may have a copy of it and that I should ask on here just in case.

I have searched online to see if I could find come sort of transcription of it but have not come up with anything.

I have him in both the 1861 and 1871 census returns, the info given on them is James Harvey born abt 1826 Fishmonger and the two addresses, respectively.

It was just a suggestion by a local studies group that if I could somehow get information regarding the rate payer for his address, (the site would have been a shop with a dwelling above) I might be able to find out if he had a fishmongers shop or not and also that the rate payers book would contain more information regarding the property itself and possibly about my gx4 grandfather.

Thank you for your offer of help regarding the census returns I do appreciate it.

Just saw your other post, thank you for looking, really any help is brilliant, I was just trying to clear up as to whether he had a shop or not and maybe what it might have been called etc.  I am looking down this route as tracing him backwards at the moment is proving very difficult, so am trying to find any clues that might help in facilitating further research of the family.

Thank you again.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 & 1871 Southwark Rate Book
« on: Tuesday 27 May 08 13:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Just wondered if anyone has access to the 1861 Rate Payers Book for Tooley Street in Southwark and would mind having a look for me at number 91.

I have just heard from Southwark local studies group, that my Gx4 Grandfather who was a Fishmonger at the time and lived at 91 Tooley St, was more than likely to have lived over his own shop!!  They also advised that the Rate Book would show information about him and the premises.

In 1871 he lived at 195 Central Street, Southwark, same profession.

I would be very grateful if anyone has this information for either address and would be willing to share it with me and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Figures I would start with a shocker! lol.  It is very absorbing and I am a huge history lover so for me it is so interesting.

Thanks for the encouragement and the advice, I will get there in the end!
