Australia / Re: Help please: immigration to Queensland DRUMMOND 1880s and 1890s

Hi Deb,

I'm sorry, I don't think there are any Mathers in our Telford tree, and don't think we have any Telfords who went to NZ - they seem to have stuck to Queensland Aus (and Yonkers, New York).

Best wishes,

Lesley

Amazing - thank you Barbara, that must be Ann.  I may even have looked at this record in the past, but had no idea Raby/Roby was Huyton (thank you too Alan).

I also never knew there was a sister Harriet although i suspected there must be more children - i just found what must be James Ellis's marriage on Lancs online parish clerk site a couple of days ago:

Marriage: 2 May 1814 St John, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Ellis - Stonemason of Liverpool
Ann Arnold - Spinster of the same parish
Witness: Edwd. Potter, (X); W. Holden
Married by Banns by: Richd. Loxham Minisr.
    Register: Marriages 1813 - 1820, Page 41, Entry 121
    Source: LDS Film 1656197

More searching now for Harriet and also for Arnold family in Liverpool

Thanks again.

Lancashire / Help needed finding James Ellis, Ann Edmondson in 1851 census
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have hit a bit of a brick wall and would appreciate any help in finding 1851 census record.

I am looking  for James Ellis (a stonemason, b 1788 Kirkburton, Yorkshire, lived in Prescot, Lancs).  He may have been living with his daughter Ann (b 1820 Huyton) who was married to Anthony Edmondson (b about 1820 Dents/Donts in Yorkshire, a bit of a jack of all trades who worked as a labourer/beer seller/marble polisher).  James would have been a widower - I believe his wife died before 1841.

These are the records I have:

1841:
James Ellis living as a lodger in Fell Lane, Prescot with two sons (Richard Ellis, b 1828 Huyton, and John Ellis b 1832 Huyton).   No definite record of whereabouts of daughter Ann Ellis (b 1820 Huyton).

1848:
Ann Ellis marries in St Helens:
Anthony Edmondson - above age Labourer Bachelor of Whiston
Ann Ellis - above age Spinster of Prescot
Groom's Father: Thomas Edmondson Bride's Father: James Ellis
Witness: Richard Ellis; Alice Leyland Married by: Edward Carr

1851 census:
Richard and John Ellis still living in Fell Lane Prescot, but without their father.

1852:
Richard Ellis marries at St Bride's Liverpool - Ann and Anthony Edmondson were the witnesses

1861 census:
James Ellis (aged 74) living in Chorlton upon Medlock with his married daughter Ann Edmondson (and husband Anthony Edmondson, a beer seller/marble polisher b about 1819 - I believe Anthony died in 1868 when his age given as 44, so possibly he was born about 1824).

I am guessing that James may have already been living with his daughter in 1851 but can find no trace of them - I am hoping someone with sharper eyes than me might be able to track them down!

Best wishes,

Lesley

Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / Re: Tamworth in 1700s (Woodcock family)

Many thanks for the suggestions - I will order a copy of Henry Wood's book.  I had found the Staffs Past Track site, which is fascinating, and really what prompted me to look further into the history of Tamworth.

Best wishes,

Lesley

Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / Tamworth in 1700s (Woodcock family)
« on: Saturday 02 October 10 15:09 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone can suggest any books or resources about history / daily life in Tamworth in the eighteenth century. I am looking at the family of Richard Woodcock who seems to have been a hairdresser/wig maker/hatter, with a shop in Market Street in 1818.

I would also be interested to hear of anyone researching the same family - Richard's son Samuel was living in George Street in 1841 working as a 'Hair Manufacturer' (?? presumably something to do with wigs?).   Next door to Samuel in 1841 was Joseph Woodcock, an innkeeper, and I am guessing the families were related.

Very grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks Junev.

I have tried to find 34 Grosvenor St in 1861 census without success in the past, but wondered if it was my lack of expertise.

But birth cert definitely for son Richard Henry Woodcock in 1859 definitely shows address as 3 Grosvenor St .  So Grosvenor St must have existed then.

I wondered if this was a new street, and only the early numbers existed in 1861, but if you can't find Grosvenor St at all, is it possible that it was missed off the census?

Best wishes,

Lesley

Dear all,

Would much appreciate any help in finding the family of Richard Woodcock in the 1861 census.

The family were living in Birmingham in 1851, but must have moved up to Cheshire in the late 1850s - son Richard Henry was born 16 April 1859 at 34 Grosvenor Street, Tranmere, Birkenhead, Cheshire, but I cannot find them in 1861 census.

The family were living at 3 Grosvenor St in both 1871 and 1881 census, so possibly the birth certificate should read '3 Grosvenor Street'?  Or perhaps the street numbers were changed?

Family probably includes:
Richard Woodcock born about 1840 Birmingham, a tailor (Head of Household)
Rhoda Woodcock (wife) born about 1823 Shropshire
Edwin Samuel Woodcock born 1848 Birmingham
Sarah Woodcock born 1850 Birmingham
Adelaide Woodcock born 1854 Birmingham
Richard Henry Woodcock (son) born 1859 Tranmere, Cheshire

Very grateful for any help or suggestions,

Best wishes,

Lesley (Telford)

I can't find them in 1861 census at all - but son Richard Henry was born 16 April 1859 at 34 Grosvenor Street, Tranmere, Birkenhead, Cheshire (the family living at 3 Grosvenor St in 1871).  I have his birth cert - gives mother as Rhoda Woodcock, formerly Trumper.

You just beat me to it - I can't find them in 1861 but found them in Cheshire in 1871 - birthplace Bridgenorth Shropshire

Thanks very much for this Tati (had not found it myself) - looks very like my Rhoda.  Worfield in Bridgenorth area, so would fit.  Also daughter of Richard and Rhoda was named Sarah.

And her parents too, looks like!

And thanks everyone else who is looking - it is wonderful to have so much help.

BWs,

Lesley

Same here - no luck with Richard Woodcock to any Rhoda at all.

Do you have this christening yet? (Source http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch)

Rhodey Trumper 12 Jan 1823 Worfield, Shropshire
Mother Sarah Trumper

(added: There's a christening for a Sarah Trumper in Worfield, 13 May 1802, parents Thomas Trumper and Ann)
