Herefordshire / Re: Marden
« on: Wednesday 13 April 11 19:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi cimbrio, if it helps your research, in 1881 Alfred was probably living in Litmarsh with a t not an l. It's a small area just next to Marden to the NE.
You say Sarah married a man called Walwyn, was that his first name or his surname?
If you want to find out more about poor old William's story the main local paper is The Hereford Times, it would certainly have covered that event. Also you could try the Court archives as there would have been a trial if the culprit was apprehended, and, in those days, a hanging!
Hope this helps,  Holmes!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / when and why?
« on: Sunday 04 April 10 16:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi, happy Easter everyone.
I wonder if anyone can clean this up a bit, despeckle it, and perhaps jiggle the focus and contrast. I'm hoping to enlarge it a little and frame it as a present. Not sure about the background though, it looks too false, as if it's a screen or a projected image. I think it would look better in black and white rather than the almost sepia it is now, don't you think?
If any of you experts out there can date it, that would be great. I understand that the card dates it to 1903+ and this young chap died in 1910 at only 32. It's always been a mystery to us why a young man in his late 20's, of no great means financially, would take himself off to a studio to have this taken, at that time.
I've tried to research the photographer, H. Rumbold, but no luck so far.
Many thanks for any help.

Herefordshire / Re: Withington Langfords

Hi, thanks again, I didn't know Mary's maiden name was Williams, that's great  ;D  Yes you're right about Thomas, he was born in Knighton, Radnorshire, abt 1827-31, and Mary in, Bodenham, Hfds, abt 1825-29, Remembering their ages doesn't seem to be too important for this family! I think Charles may not have survived childhood since he's not there in1861, and Henry appears in 1855, sadly that's 10 years older than my mystery man, unless...
I think I may have to find this Henry's stats if only to try to eliminate him.
(The Preece names I have so far are Alice b.1883, father James, and John and Florence)
Thank's again for your time and trouble, H

Hi Snoop, thanks for the look-up, that is the family I've been looking at, but not sure if it's the right one yet  :-\
If you look back at my original thread, the mystery man I'm after is Henry b. abt 1866, according to his m. and d. certs. I'm beginning to think that he either used a different name or 'enhanced' his age when he met and married in 1905. If you have the time, a b. and d. for Thomas and Mary, the parents, would help to fill the picture a little.
I'm currently trying to trace the siblings to see if anything fits.  ???
By the way, I see that you have Preece, Herefordshire,  in your surname list, are they anywhere near Lugwardine?

Hi Indi, about the date... I have an old  photo which is mounted in exactly the same way as yours and it was dated at 1903 +  Your man looks about the right age for that. :)

Radnorshire / Re: Family Name of LANGFORD
« on: Friday 06 June 08 09:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've got Langfords in my tree as well. While searching for them in Withington, Herefordshire I found a family headed by Mary in 1881 whose husband (deceased) was Thomas born in Knighton abt 1825. Don't know their m. or d. years yet, I've been up a different branch!
Do you know yet if your John and Ann had children?
If you find a Thomas in the mix, please let me know and we'll swop notes.

Hi Rootschatters, as a relative 'noob' to this, I find myself now needing to receive Gedcom files and would like to know if anyone has advice on what software to get. For instance, what should I go for, where from, how much should I spend, is there a free download etc.,etc.
                         Any comments welcome,  Hol.

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / west lydiat - withington or nunnington ? ? ?
« on: Saturday 31 May 08 17:16 BST (UK)  »
My research has led me to a small 'settlement' just to the west of Withington, circa 1880, called West Lydiat. I can't tell from old maps if it is part of the village or if it's actually part of the nearby Nunnington Court estate to which it might be connected by a lane.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this area, or might be able to suggest a way of finding out about it? What was it, what was it's purpose, is it still there, were there houses there, and who lived there???
Any interest gratefully accepted.  H!
