Hello Martin, on this cold morning.  I think you also sent me a message on Ancestry, although you would not have known we are the same person.  You are welcome to the certificates or images, whichever you want, although I will need your address if they are posted.   I will explain more on the Ancestry message link.

Hi, I found loose in a book a small certificate received by the above, awarded by Stourbridge Higher Education Committee in 1929 for his work in Pottery & Glass.

If he is of interest to you, please reply, I will give you my address  and I am happy to send it to you on receipt of an SAE.

Otherwise I could attach an image to a second message, but pity not to have the certificate.

Happy researching!

Many thanks - seems obvious now you have both explained it but I didn't work it out!

Family History Beginners Board / Asylum coding by names

Hi, I am looking at the 1939 Registration schedule for Cane Hill Asylum in Coulsdon, Surrey, for a family member and see at the top of one column the letters O, V, S, P, I - patients are  given one of these letters by their names.

Can anyone tell me what the letters stand for, please?

Many thanks.

Dublin / Re: Lavinia Tabb c1838 -?

Thanks - yes I looked for a second marriage and couldn't find one in England and Wales - if Ireland, more difficult.   I have records for someone who I hope is their daughter - Gertrude Ridley - who gives her birth place as Finsbury with a date varying from 1864 to 1868.  I cannot find a birth record for Gertrude or any census entries until after her marriage in 1889 when there is plenty of information.
It is the earlier information I need.  She must be in the 1871 census but under what name?  The problem with theatricals is that they had stage names - hers was Gertrude Monti - as did her husband.

Dublin / Lavinia Tabb c1838 -?

Hi, I am looking for any information about the above, daughter of Robert Tabb.  She married Joseph Ridley in St Mary's, Dublin in 1859.  Joseph was a gymnast/clown, born 1835/6, one of the "Brothers Ridley". He died in Edinburgh in February 1868 of meningitis while on tour.  Lavinia was the informant, present at the death.   Newspaper reports say that Joseph left a wife and daughter.   I cannot find Lavinia after 1868.

Grateful for any help with Lavinia.

Thanks for reading this!

Hope someone can make use of them!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Sketchbook owner's name?
« on: Friday 07 September 18 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Again, thanks to you all for the thoughtful responses, and thanks especially to bbart for the relevant Indus timetable.   The watercolour of Gibraltar from the boat is firmly part of the sketchbook. I think the watercolour title is by another hand and that it is dated 28 September 1858.   Would a naval man have the leisure time to sketch and paint on board Indus?  Was the book was given by a family member to Mr X the naval man, and the donor carefully wrote X's name on the first page  but X then did only one watercolour which he dated?

I am heartened that so many other researchers share my fascination with the puzzles of genealogy!
