Ooh, Irene!!  I could kiss you  :-*  :-*  :-*

Thank you very much for your help!  His wife, Jane, died in 1847 so the "married" bit must have been an oversight.  I had come to the decision that he must have crossed the Border by then, as he had a couple of children up there with his second wife before returning back to Northumberland.  What an enigma!!

Cheers

Hi,

Maurice Mumberson is my uncle.  He had two full sisters and a step sister and brother.  Please get in touch for further info.

Thanks for the speedy responses June & Paul!!  ;D

That's excellent, it's pretty much the site of the current Queen Elizabeth Hospital where I worked for a while.  Will try to find out when it opened.

The mapping website is brilliant, Paul.  Definitely one for the favourites.

Cheers  :-*  :-*

Durham / Smallpox Hospital in Gateshead c1871
« on: Friday 11 February 05 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received an ancestor's death certificate from 1871 that states his place of death as "Smallpox Hospital, Gateshead".  Can anyone tell me where that would have been located?  He was living in Low Fell at the time of the 1871 census.

Also, would he have been able to have a civil burial or would his body have been disposed of via the hospital?

Thanks for your attention!

Janeen  ;)
