Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Richard Matthews

Hallo Lesanne

I'm so sorry that I haven't looked at Rootschat for ages, and so didn't see your message til today.

I got William's marriage to Elizabeth Matthews from the Oxford record Office, looking at the St Peter in the East register:

June 1st 1830 after Banns. He a batchelor OTP, she a spinster OTP. Witnesses Thos Bowell and Hannah Bowell (her mark). On the Banns, her surname is spelt with only one T.

I'm still looking for the birth of Richard Matthews, her father, and wonder if the birth in Down Ampney 1766 could be right. D. A. is pretty close to South Cerney.
If his father is shown as a shoemaker, it might be a clue!!

Its all very frustrating.............
Jackie

Hallo Gillg
Thanks for looking at the marriage entry of Richard Matthews and Amy Norris, and for the tip about looking at a trade directory, though so far I haven't come across one for the right date and area.
Regards, Jackie

Dear Lesanne
It has intruiged me for some that Elizabeth Matthews, whose mother was a Norris, then married a Norris in Oxford. I have posted a reader query in the Glos. FHS journal to see if anyone can find a link between the Glos Norrises and the Oxf Norrisses, but it hasn't been published yet.
If you ever find any eveidence, please let me know!
Thanks, Jackie

Hi Kuniv, and welcome to RootsChat :)

From the IGI extracted record the marriage of Amy and Richard took place in South Cerney, too, so the first thing to do would be to look at the South Cerney parish register, to see if there is any note to say whether Richard was "of this parish" or from somewhere else.   Although there are several Gloucestershire births on the IGI for Richard Matthews around 1770-80, I can't see one from South Cerney.  Maybe someone with access to other records can find him.

I shall be in Gloucester Record Office next week, so can take a look at the South Cerney PR for the marriage and see whether the baptisms show Richard and possibly siblings.

Gillg

Hallo Gill
Many thanks for responding so quickly and for offering to look for Richard and possible siblings.  If you find anything I would be thrilled to hear it. I believe that it does not say'of this parish' but only that he was a shoemaker. I suppose he may have come from out-of-county, in which case there's not much hope!
with best wishes Jackie

Hallo Susan
Thank you for prompt response about Richard Matthews. I have been able to make only one visit to Glos record office, but I did look at the registers, and it does not say where Richard comes from, only that he was a shoemaker. I shall try all the Glos parishes eventually but of course, he may be from out-of-county.
with best wishes, Jackie

My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Matthews (bap 30 June 1804 at South Cerney. Mother Amy Norris (bap 3 June 1782 at South Cerney). Father was Richard Matthews a shoemaker and they were married on 13 May 1804. I know nothing more of him. Does anyone know his date of birth/parents/parish Please??
