Offaly (Kings) / Re: Margaret Kilroe c.1892
« on: Friday 02 March 18 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Eileen,

I have found dribbles of information on my Kilroes but not really that much further forward (or backward as the case may be).

My 3 X Great Grandfather Michael Kilroe (Peters' father) was born between 1821 and 1831 in either King's County or Westmeath.

Married Mary Dunne on 26 Sep 1852, Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland (Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915)
Also found here: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000635217#page/170/mode/1up

1901 Census: 15 Montrath, Rahugh, Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland - a Farmer aged 70 (potential birth year 1831), Birth Place: King's County with wife Mary aged 70 (her actual age was 73) and unmarried son James aged 40

1911 Census: 28 Montrath, Rahugh, Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland - a General Labourer & widower aged 90 (potential birth year 1821), Birth Place: Westmeath with unmarried son James aged 50

Death: 9 Apr 1917, Lunatic Asylum, Mullingar, Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland. Age: 94. Married. Labourer. From Mountrath, Tyrrellspass, County Westmeath, Ireland. Senility: 4 years, 1 month & 25 days. Informant: J. Duignan, Mullinger, present at death. (potential birth year 1823)

He is buried at Rahugh, Tullamore, Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland with no headstone (this information from Mary fitzpatrick)

I have been unable to find a baptism for Michael so far, although I have information that his parents could possibly be Peter Kilroe & Mary Walsh (I can't for the life of me remember where this came from) or Michael Kilroe & M. Brennan.

I have the following children for Michael and Mary, there are gaps, especially between Peters baptism in 1855 and Michaels in 1860. I have also been unable to find a baptism for James despite scouring the records - this is not helped by me getting side-tracked when I come across other records from other branches while doing so - I need to be more focused and strict with myself:

Mary Kilroe
Birth 1853 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Baptism: 24 Apr 1853 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Death 27 Jul 1933 • 1 Seapoint Road, Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland

Mary married James Crinnion on 8 Aug 1875 • Roman Catholic Chapel of Kilbeggan, Kilbeggan, Tullamore, County Westmeath, Ireland and I have traced 9 children for them but no Michael which would follow the Irish naming pattern.

Peter Kilroe (My 2 X Great Grandfather)
Birth 1855 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Baptism: 25 Feb 1855 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Death 21 Jul 1913 • Kilmurry, Ballycommon, Tullamore, King's County, Ireland

Married Esther Sheeran 15 Aug 1878 • Tullamore, King's County, Ireland (Unfortunately no image available) and I have traced 12 children that they had.

Michael Kilroe
Birth 1860 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Baptism: 29 Jun 1860 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Death Unknown
No further information found on Michael.

James Kilroe
Birth ABT 1861 • Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland
Baptism: None found
Death 6 Jan 1941 • Mountrath, Kilbeggan, Moycashel, County Westmeath, Ireland (James died a bachelor in a house fire)

So in essence, the sticking point is still Michaels' birth and parentage and it is this I really need to concentrate on and methodically search the baptisms, probably fanning out from Kilbeggan to have any success and not get side-tracked when I find other lines.  :)

Best Wishes
Lynn

Hi Marilyn,
Thank you for the information.

I found James on Moray Libindx, ref NM033462. This is where I found the information that he had died in 1924 in Vermont, U.S.A. The same record also states that James is the father of my 2 X Great Grandfather Alexander Paterson or Smith by Isabella Smith. I got in touch with Moray Libindx to ask where this information had come from and they tell me they didn't keep the details. Kind of strange really when information of all sources really should be kept in family history research.

I then got in touch with Vermont State Archives who were unable to find a death record for James (unsurprising if he died in Boston, Mass). They did however send me a whole load of records, including his wife Isabel's death record, Their son James Robertson Pat(t)erson's birth and marriage plus some of his children's birth records.

I have had a look for the Elspet you mention and believe she may be the daughter of James Paterson and Magdalene (Medley) Bremner and was born on 31st August 1819 n Rathven, Banff.

Amongst other children James & Magdalene also had a son James born 31st July 1815. I believe this James may be the father of my James and would also fit in with James being brought up by his Aunt Eppie (Elspeth). Elspet was married to Alexander Simpson and I have found the census records for them, also Elspet's death record.

Interestingly in the 1861 census Elspet (who was widowed) and family were living at Longfolds, three houses away from Isabella Smith and her parents in Wester Darbreich, Rathven, Banff. On checking a map it shows these two properties are very near neighbours. Alexander was born four years later in 1865.

In the 1851 census it shows James living with Elspet and her family at Longfolds and his birthplace is given as Rathven, Banff.

I have a wee book entitled Banffshire The People and the Lands, Part 6 The Parish of Rathven 1750 - 1850 which contains kirk Session Records. One of the records I have found in this book is dated 1844. There are two entries, the first one says that Helen McCraw is with child by James Paterson, the other says that James Paterson is the Father of a child by Helen McCraw. It doesn't actually say that they were "censured for antenuptial fornication" - as it does with most of my other ancestors mentioned.  ;D I think if the rest of the family classed James as a black sheep this was a case a pot, kettle and black.

I would be very interested in learning more about James' half-brother George that you mentioned in your first post.

Hi there,
Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Yes I am still looking for any information at all on James, he is a bit of a brickwall which I had placed on the back burner until inspiration came calling. As I could find no other information on him in Scotland, apart from the fact that he was the Father of my 2 X Great Grandfather I wasn't even aware that he had a half-brother George so that is very exciting news. This branch, and indeed almost entire side, of my family tree is full of half-siblings, illegitimate children etc., in fact it is rare that I come across a legitimate child being born.  ;D

Look forward to hearing from you

Andy,

I'm on holiday from Friday for over 2 weeks and intend to spend at least one of my days through Elgin way and need to find a few of my own in the New Cemetery, as well as the cathedral (just as well I've got a very understanding other half who doesn't mind spending his holidays trawling graveyards!  ;D).......I will have a look for you.

Hi Andy,

Just ran a quick search on Scotland's People and found that Jessie died in Elgin, Moray.

Then checked Moray Libindx and found Jessie:

Hi Jeannette,

My 4 X Great Grandfather is Robert Allanach born 1791 Camisour, Strathdon, Aberdeen. According to his death cert his parents were John Allanach and Sophia McHardy - this is where I have hit my brickwall.

I believe my Allanachs would be related to your Allanachs but because of this brickwall I haven't managed to get very far with proving/disproving that theory. It doesn't help that the Allanachs also seemed to have used the name Stuart at some point.

I have a copy of your William's Mother Mary's death cert which states that her parents are William Allanach, Ship Carpenter, deceased and Mary Allanach, M.S. Forbes. Mary died on 24th May 1892 aged 80 at Millhochie, Tullynessle, Aberdeen and was the widow of John Allanach, Crofter.

John died a pauper (formerly farm servant) on 15th August 1881 at Millhochie, Tullynessle aged 81 years, his parents are William Allanach, gardener & Isabella Allanach M.S. Grassick (both deceased).

I have a fair collection of Allanach certs which I will look through over the weekend to see if I can find any more which may be of relevance to you.

Lynn  :)
