To Diddy Miller,

This is brownwest.

Its been sometime since we spoke on roots. I was wondering if you cna give a bit more assitance on the local history library you mentioend previously - with all the records that index there?

My Dad is coming to Loughborough (form london) in late July 2011 and is going to check out some burials plots at Welford Rd Cemetry and perhaps some other information if we can get some more details on where is best to go?

Can you assit?

Regards

Thankyou ever so much Diddy.

That's great confirmation for me and takes back at least another generation!

Yep the West's were definetly "Loughborough people".

My Dad is visiting the cemetery there also later this month - we have confirmed some (West's ) burials there also.

Many Thanks

HI Just wondering if anyone could do another look up at All Saints  - Loughborough.

Looking to confirm my Great x3 Grandfathers details.

IGI states he was;

Charles West born abt 1809 -Loughborough, Leics

Christening record for IGI says 23 jan 1809

Parents should be Gabriel West and Mary keighley - both of Loughborough or Shepshed.

Other real mystery is his Wife  - Phoebe Hull born abt 1816  - Location unknown.

IGI states they married 3 Nov 1835.

I'm really after some details on her parents names and her place of birth?

Many Thanks in Advance.

My Great x3 Grandfather was Charles West of Loughborough - 1809-1893.

He was listed in the 1861 census as a Master FWK. By the time we get to the 1881 census it states he was a retired Lace Tradesmen.

Does constitute a move up in the ranks to say  a " Factor" like position in the trade?

His WILL names him as a gentlemen -

not sure if that was  a loose term of affection. I can't imagine too many people who's roots were in the framing trades and the relative poverty of the 19th century Leics ever really were given the status of Gentlemen?

After all he only left a 150 quid!!!!

World War One / Royal Field Artillery Boer War - WW1
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 12:05 BST (UK)  »

Photo (below)is my Great Grandfather - Francis (Frank) West -born 1877, Hucknall Notts.

Served with the 75th Bty in the Boer War - I have just an amazing amount of stuff on his service there - thanks to a Midland historian who had a 1911 newspaper article on soldiers interviewed from that war.

I have his Queens Medal also.

However WW1 service is proving far more difficult.

His WW1 pension record shows plenty of detail from his regular service between 1897-1913. But has little on his time in WW1. He transferred to 1st class reserve in 1913, I suspect he was called up sometime in 1914 as he earnt 1914-15 star on ( eligible -20 Sept 1915 - France.)

Family Story always goes that he also served in Greece  / Med and Egypt in WW1. (Perhaps Gallipoli Campaign)

His WW1 medal roll is not much better or easier to decipher. I know he was an acting WO 2 at the end of service (on his medal roll). I also know (from the family) he was badly gased in France -thus he was pensioned off for life.

I can't decipher from the roll whether he served in the 160 Brigade or 160 bty RFA? Obviously this will determine what Division he was with.

Can anyone assist - I'm in Australia, so can't pop off to Kew in a Hurry.

I'm very keen to learn his WW1 unit history and battles associated.
