Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Henry Webber, RN - Possible Hampshire Marriage
« on: Monday 13 February 12 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you folks for the various responses.

I know Henry's precise birthdate of 4th June, 1880.

I have access to 1911 census records, but have found neither Henry or his ship HMS Mercury for that date.

His 2nd marriage was in Edinburgh to Alexandrina Goodwin and he died there in March 1938, the death being registered by the said 2nd wife.

Is there some conclusive evidence that jane Elizabeth Widgery married Albert Edward, the BMD record quotes Henry Webber as a possible spouse also.

Regards,

John

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Henry Webber, RN - Possible Hampshire Marriage

Good evening Fellow Chatters,

Henry Webber was born in Berkinhead in 1880 and served in the RN from June 1900 to June 1922.
He married in Edinburgh in 1919 and stated his status as widower.

I have found his service record detailing his career rise from Stoker to Chief Stoker whilst serving on numerous different ships. The 1901 census shows him serving on HMS Resolution in Gibralter, but I cannot find a 1911 record.

I have found in excess of 30 Henry Webber marriages in the relevant period but no obvious matches.

Henry was serving on HMS Revenge based at Portsmouth in 1906 when a marriage of a Henry Webber is recorded to either Ellen Jane Linnie or Jane Elizabeth Widgery. I have found 2 records of an Ellen Webber dying in Alverstoke in Q3/1907 or Q2/1911 in Newton Abbot. I have not found a recorded death of a Jane Webber in the relevant period.

The former Ellen Webber death at Alverstoke looks to be a distinct possible., but I am reluctant to add to my failed certificate collection without attempting to achieve a little more certainty.

I have hunted for Hampshire Parish Records but have been unsuccessful.

I would be grateful if any members could suggest any other line of approach which might assist in finding Henry's first wife.

Regards,

John Bennett

Thank you Iluleah & Nell for your rapid response to my query.

I realise that Hants Record Office is the obvious place to start but I am unlikely to get there in any time soon.

I had already done a pretty exhaustive search of prisoner calendars etc and just hoped that someone had any alternative ideas.

Regards,

John

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Rose Ann Webber - Inmate Christchurch Prison
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 21:46 BST (UK)  »
Good Evening All,

Rose Ann Gallaher married Henry Webber in Birkenhead Q1/1878. They had 11 children, 2 of whom died in infancy. The 1st nine kids were born in Birkenhead and the last 2, Nellie(Q2/1900) & Frederick John (Q2/1903) were registered in Southampton.

Rose Ann appears with her husband & family in teh 1881 & 1891 census in Birkenhead, but in 1901 he says he is widowed and is livining in Ichen. However, in the 1911 census Rose Ann reappears as his wife. I believe that Rose Ann was an inmate of Christchurch prison in 1901 and Henry claimed widower status out of embarrassment.

I am anxious to find out why Rose Ann was imprisoned and for how long.

I haven't been able to locate any online Court or prison records for this period and I wonder whether any Roots Chat member could suggest a possible source of such records. Any suggestion would be most gratefully received.

Regards,

John Bennett

CaroleW,

many, many thanks for your prompt and helpful comment re-Winifred Spencer.

I was trawling for her on behalf of a neighbour, Jean Kinsella, and have the details on to her. She will probably make contact with you.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Winifred Spencer - Lancashire
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 16:04 BST (UK)  »
I am hunting for some details of the parents of Winifred Spencer. born in Lancs. about 1911. Her father could be Robert, John or Richard Spencer.

I don't believe that she was born prior to the 1911 census.

Winifred married John Stitt in 1945 and had 2 daughters.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jean Kinsella

To my knowledge the harbour has always been Cork Harbour. Cobh is the port town.

I was born across the harbour at Crosshaven and have a house about 30 km away, and about 75 years knowledge of the area.

I was trying to be helpful and a 'thank you' might have been appropriate!

For your info., The correct spelling of the town you refer to is Cobh.

Prior to Independence it was known as Queenstown. You should probably use the latter name for pre-1921 event searches.

Devon / John LEAT, Drum Major, Royal Marines
« on: Friday 18 March 11 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Good Evening,

I am searching for details of the birth of Kate Leat who married Frederick Luckman in Bath in 1860. Her father is quoted as John Leat, Drum Major. She has given her date/place of birth as 1835/Stonehouse or Plymouth in census records from 1861 to 1911.

There is no Kate Leat in the baptismal records for the '3 Towns', but there is a marriage of a John Leat to a Mary Weeks at Plymouth St Andrew on 16/7/1822.
The only baptism I can find is of Elizabeth Leat in June 1823, with the father being a Royal Marine Corporal.

I have also found census records for 1841 - 1861 for Mary Leat with daughters Mary, Caroline & Emily. The mother Mary is shown as a widow in 1851 & 1861.

I have an unsubstantiated hunch that Caroline is my Kate Leat, only for the reason that one of her daughters was christened Kate Caroline.

I have also seen an old (2008) Rootschat posting from 'Julied' referring to the marriage of an Emily Leat, daughter of Drum Major John Leat.

I would be extremely grateful if any subscribers could provide me with some assistance in finding some further positive information about John Leat and his family.

Kind regards, John Bennett
