Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Anna Hollingsworth Hogg
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 09:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Kiwi007,
I like your thinking and who knows, maybe Anna and James were Lilians parents, its a really tangled web for sure! heres an extract from the email I received from my cousin ....'Here is what I know from first hand as my Nan, Lilian Catherine Long left us tapes where she talks about her life.Lilian Parker was a two year old baby when Mrs White walked past the garden and saw Lilian sitting in a laundry basket all dirty and crying.  Somehow Lilian went to live with the Whites and became their daughter.
The Whites liked to drink and were upholsterers.
Lilian would often come home an d find the furniture all sold and the Whites drunk. She had a hard time and often Mrs White moved home to get away from her husband and often changed her name. Lilian went to work in a tailors shop with another six girls working for a young Jewish owner.
Lilian got pregnant by the shop owner who then closed the shop and ran away to America leaving Lilian to bring up the baby alone.
I dont think I'm ever destined to unearth the true facts but it was great having your help and I really appreciate your research into this quagmire. I'll keep you informed should I ever get further ahead with the mystery. My very best wishes to you. Helga

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Anna Hollingsworth Hogg

Hello again Kiwi007,
thanks again for your input ... I haven't furthered my searches for quite a while as I kept banging straight into dead ends, at the same time I'm desperate to find out more. I did have a distant cousin (also descended from Lilian, contact me, she explained (family legend apparently) that Lilian was spotted in a pram outside  a house (presumably the Parkers) .. dirty and disheveled, Anna Hogg approached the parents who  agreed to allow her to 'adopt' the little girl. On Lilians marriage certificate, her fathers occupation is listed as upholsterer, deceased. I was also informed that James Hogg (also an upholsterer) and Anna  Hogg were fond of the bottle, they appear to have done several moonlight flits and were quite good at avoiding any documentation concerning their whereabouts .. this could explain why they are impossible to find in the census records for 1891. To make matters more complicated, I was then told that Lilian worked for a Jewish Tailor by whom she subsequently became pregnant in 1905, this was my Grandfather .. I had believed that George Long (married Lilian in 1906) was my Grandfather so it was all quite a shock (having searched for years regarding the Long family) Apparently Anna Hogg and Lilian lived on the same street in Bristol (Oak Rd Ashley) for quite a few years. Lilian was present at the death of James and Anna. James died on the 11 Jan 1926, his address was 100 Fishponds Rd. He is listed as a journeyman upholsterer. Lilians address was 91 Oak Rd. Horfield Bristol. On Annas death certificate (15March 1929), it states that present at the death was 'L Long, adopted daughter, 14 Gilmore Cottages, Ashfield Place, Bristol. I have not been able to trace anything for Lilians birth or who her parents (The Parkers) were. The Tailor she worked for and became pregnant by purportedly sold his shop and set off on the quickest ship to America as soon as he was informed of the baby .. as you can imagine, I know nothing about him at all .. not even his name. If you are able to find anything regarding Lilian and her family, I would so much appreciate it, I'm at a total loss in all the twists and turns. In any event I do thank you for everything you have already discovered, you are a star!
Many kind wishes
Helga

Hi Kiwi007, thanks for your help. I have managed to untangle some of the facts you mention. It would appear that Lillian Parker was adopted by the Hoggs, she is my paternal Great Grandmother. I have spent countless hours trying to discover her birth details to no avail. On her marriage certificate (to George Henry Long in 1906) it states that her Father was one Thomas Parker, deceased .. I have no leads on him either although I believe he was also an upholsterer. The Hoggs traveled about quite a bit and only appear on some of the census lists which has complicated matters for me with regard Lilian. I thank you so much again for the effort you have made on my behalf, it is very much appreciated!

Hi
Thank you s very much ... how did you do that!! I tried to track Anna Hogg but got absolutly nowhere with the census. As I thought she was a direct relation for some while, I managed to find her (census) upto and including her marriage to James Hogg but you found them!!
I've been trying to track these people for years now!
I can't thank you enough .. I'm headed back to the census to see if I can glean anything from the info, soooo excited I could kiss you!

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Parker Lilian Bristol
« on: Friday 19 February 10 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am looking for my Great Grandmother, Lilian Parker.
I only have the scantest details about her life. From her marriage cert : Married in
1906 in the Parish Church of St Clements Bristol ,
age 20 (birth year 1886),
spinster
Fathers Name: Thomas Parker (deseased) Upholsterer,
Husband: George Henry Long
age 25 (born 1881)
Occupation: Man Of Wars Man
Father: George Henry Long (deseased) Labourer
I have only recently discovered that my Grandfather (Lilians son) was illegitimate.
His name was Edward James Charles Long born 1904 in Ashley Vale Bristol.
The birth records him as Edward James Charles Parker, I haven't yet discovered if he was formally adopted by Lilians husband but he seems to have spent his life as Edward Long.
I have been told that Lilian was taken in (adopted?) by Anna Hollingsworth Hogg Nee White when she was a very small child. I have been unable to trace Lilian or Mrs Hogg on either the 1891 or 1901 census listings.
I have also been told that Lilian who was living in Horfield, became pregnant with my Grandfather Edward ,from the Jewish owner of a Tailors shop (again in Horfield) who then sold the shop and flitted offf to America!
The address I have on Edwards Birth cert is: 85 Ashley Vale Bristol
From Lilian and Georges Marriage cert: 8 Hill Street Bristol
I have also been told that Mrs Hogg (who also raised Edward) and Lilian lived seperatly in Oak Rd Horfield.
If anyone can help locate any info on Lilian or my Grandfather Edward it would be a real gift. IThe above details are all I have of this Family as Edward also did a moonlight flit, I know very little about him.
Thanks so much

Dear Oly
sorry I didn't get straight back to thank you for the information you posted, (ripping out carpet so have just got back online) its a huge help.
Was this info from the Rafferty on the Thornaby Cemetery War Memorial?
I thought that (on the Memorial) he was a 'T' Rafferty? ... The John Rafferty you have provided info for was (I think) either 'T' Raffertys Son or Brother ... all these Raffertys lol!
If you can point me in the right direction of how to obtain info about Thornaby WW1 fallen (I have one Thomas and two John Raffertys who died between 1915 - nov. 1917) I would be really gratefull.
Thanks for your help Oly, appreciate it
                              best Wishes

Hi
Just an update ... have just received the marriage Certificate for Jane Robinson and yes, she and her Father Thomas were the Family members I had been looking for... Thank you so much!
One puzzling thing, Thomas is listed on the War Memorial yet his death Cert states that he died of Acute Bronchitis ... I wondered if anyone knows how I can go about finding information about the listed Men on the War Memorial?
In light of the death Certificate I really need to check to see if they are the same 'T Raffertys'
               Thanks for everything
