You were right. From New Brunswick they ended up in Maine. Still filecutters. Alice ended up able to read and write. At last some of our family made good!! Thank you.

This is a family of file cutters from Warrington. Samuel  is literate but Alice (Culm)  has to make her mark when they marry.  They got married in July August September of 1858.  Grandmother Alice Stott has some money as she employed 8 people but is always listed as a fustian cutter.

Why would Samuel and his family go out to New Brunswick and come back in 1861. Strangely enough I can't find any later record of them. Wonder if they emigrated and popped back for a visit with the baby?

Where is New Brunswick. Is it Canada? How can I check if they were out there? Are there any free records?  So many questions and so few answers!!!!!

In the 1861 census Samuel Ridgway and his wife Alice are in living in Bridge Street Warrington. They were both born in Warrington.

There daughter Alice is about 1 year old and according to the census was born in St John New BNA. On another site it is listed as St John BWA. Where on earth was she born?

Lancashire / Elizabeth Boocock

On a different forum I found someone who had sent for this birth certificate. The mother is Elizabeth Chapman and the child is registered as Elizabeth Beaucock born December 1867. Must be impossible to have a name like Boocock and be illiterate!!

Lancashire / Re: Can anyone find Mary Ann in 1871 please?

I thought I was after Bowcocks and they have turned into Briggs Boococks. Looks like the Briggs Boococks ended up in Toxteth after their dad, Thomas Briggs Boocock, died in the third quarter of 1876.

Mary Ann Boocock lost her husband Thomas just before  Samuel Holland lost his wife and two of his children. The following year Mary Ann married Samuel Holland. What a hard life. No time to grieve.

Now trying to find out a bit more about Thomas. Where and how he died.

Lancashire / Re: John Mills of Hulme

It took a long time but it turned out that Emily Fletcher's marriage to John Mills was just a non starter. They split up and lived with other people. Emily did not marry her partner William Holland although they had four children. John Mills said he was married to his but interestingly did not get married till much later on.

They must have known each other though because Emily's 18 yr old son turns up in John Mill's house on the night of the census. Must have been an arrangement!!

If you hadn't have found that newspaper article I would probably have given up a long time ago. Thank you once again. Oh and I have joined the library.

Hi
Just re reading and to let you know that Robert did not die. He was a witness at John Mills wedding - along with his wife Fanny.  Robert and Fanny had a large family and can be found in the 81,91 and 1901 census. Fanny was born in 1858 ish in Shropshire.

Oops. This is Robert BROTHER of William and not SON of William. My mistake.  Notice how often some families used the same Christian names over and over again.

Just found this and it links in with my tree. Can you tell me where William is on the 1841 census as I can't find it. If you have the address I can FindMyPast it.

Have a fair amount of info on James and John if you want it.
