Hi all,

I'm researching James Laws, who died in Howden on 25 Nov 1913, and who was buried in the town. Whilst I can trace his life after his 1868 marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Joy, I can't find any details prior to that.

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to access the Howden burial records to see if there is a date of birth listed for James, or any record of a gravestone that might give it? (I think, sometime in 1843). That way, I can sift through birth certificates to find the real James.

Other details I know... he was born in Norwich, according to multiple censuses. His wedding certificate says his father's name was Thomas, who was a plumber. There are no apparent details of James in either the 1851 or 1861 censuses, and beyond knowing his father's name, I can't find any details of his parents.

Any help that you can give me, or advice you can offer, would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance!
Jim

Hi again,
Thanks very much for all your time and guidance.

I will post James' occupation tomorrow, but according to the certificate Thomas (father) was a plumber. I have researched all the James Laws I can find and am 100% convinced that the James whose father was William the silk weaver is definitely not the James who married Sarah Joy. I have seen that link on another site but believe it to be inaccurate.

So the bottom line is that at the moment I'm still no further forward, but will let you know of james' occupation at time of marriage when I get my hands on the certificate again tomorrow.

Once more, thanks everyone for your help.
Jim

Hi again,

Thomas Laws, the father, was a PLUMBER according to the marriage certificate.
Thanks again to everyone for looking for me.

Hi Sue,
Nice to speak to you.

My Mother-in-law has the certificate at the moment, but am 95% sure it said he was a shoemaker. (I might be getting confused with the bride's father). Will check and get back to you to confirm later today.

Thanks for your help!

Norfolk / The Laws Family

Hi all,

I'm researching the Laws family and have hit a brick wall. James Laws was born in the Norwich area in around 1843 and moved to Yorkshire to marry Sarah E. Joy. There are lots of potential James Laws who appear in censuses and I think I've managed to draw a line through just about all of them. I've acquired James' marriage certificate, and his father was Thomas... but I can't find any record of this Thomas Laws, any identity of his wife, and any record of the right James in 1851 or 1861 censuses.

If anyone can shed any light on this, perhaps with access to parish records, that would be fantastic. Any susggestions of a way forward would also be very gratefully received.

Thanks everyone. Jim

Hi all,
Looking for info on James Laws born in Norwich in 1843.
However, there were a few of them, and the one I need info on is the son of THOMAS LAWS (taken from James' marriage certificate). James went on to marry Sarah E. Joy in Howden, East Riding in April 1868, but any info on his parents, ancestry, and first 25 years would be extraordinarily gratefully received.
Thanks in advance,
Jim
