He seems to be in older Australian census records as:

Alfred Longburne McNemay - Darling Downs, Qld

I have found the following records in the 1901 Scotland Census

Oh and another thought re: Robert Clark...

My family records do have his name as John (...haven't managed to make the connection as to why :-\) as it seems fairly clear that his name was Robert...

Also, my records do state that his father was a Presbytarian minister in Scotland at some point, whereas this census record has Labourer.

...perhaps there could have been more than one Robert Clark born in Dumfries in the early 1850's??
...perhaps he changed occupation??

Wow! :o

I am completely overwhelmed by the help I am getting on this!

I am still trying to get my head around it all...

With a huge amount of help from Ambly - I've found links on Annie's side back to the late 1600's - incredible!

Robert still seems somewhat elusive...
Linda - this is excellent info from the Scotland census, both the date and the location seem to align.  Were there many Robert Clark's born in/around Dumfries in the early 1850's?  I'd like to think this was him, but with such a common name, I am careful not to jump to conclusions! :)

Thank you for your reply to my post - I have since found that they were est. the textile industry at that time in Russia so that is why he was there...

The info re: the war at that time is valuable in filling in some gaps too

Thank you for your help
